About Davies

During my 9 years of piano teaching, I have been fortunate to teach more than 150 students, each with distinct goals and musical tastes. My students range from high school beginners discovering their love for music to college-level players aiming for performance excellence. I approach teaching with patience and enthusiasm, focusing on building a solid technical foundation while encouraging musical expression. Beyond just mastering notes and rhythms, I work to help students find personal meaning in the music they play, making lessons engaging and relevant. My instruction covers essential skills such as sight-reading and finger technique but also nurtures creativity by encouraging improvisation and interpretation. One standout moment in my career was helping a shy high schooler prepare for a regional competition. Their initial nervousness gave way to excitement as they learned to communicate the story behind their piece. The experience reinforced my belief that teaching piano is about more than skill acquisition—it’s about fostering confidence, discipline, and joy. I am passionate about guiding students to discover their unique musical voice and to carry that confidence beyond the piano bench into their broader lives.

My teaching approach is deeply influenced by my belief that piano education should develop both the mind and the heart. I see the piano not only as an instrument for performance but as a gateway to emotional intelligence, creative thinking, and self-discipline. My lessons are structured to reflect that. We begin with technical exercises—scales, finger drills, and sight-reading—to warm up the hands and the brain. Then we transition into repertoire, which I select carefully based on the student’s interests and skill level. I encourage students to bring in music they enjoy, and we often work on arrangements of songs they know from films, games, or radio, along with classical works. I believe that when students feel personally connected to the music, their practice becomes more meaningful and consistent. Emotional development is just as important. I teach students how to listen closely to themselves, how to recognise the emotional tone of a piece, and how to use their touch, timing, and dynamics to express that tone authentically. This turns each piece into a personal experience, not just an exercise. I ask reflective questions during lessons like, “What story is this music telling?” or “How does it make you feel when you play this passage?” These conversations often open the door to powerful moments of self-expression. I also use creative projects like improvisation, simple composition, and duet playing to help students build musical confidence. I guide them in understanding music theory as a tool to unlock creativity, rather than as a set of rules to memorise. In every lesson, I focus on progress over perfection and effort over outcomes. Students know they’re in a space where mistakes are welcome and where their personal growth is valued above all. I also make sure parents are involved when necessary, especially with young learners, so we can work as a team to support the student’s journey. I want my students to walk away from lessons not only as skilled pianists but as more expressive, focused, and confident people.
