About Lisa
My background in Spanish I have more than ten years of experience as a foreign language instructor in the United States. I have taught at the college and high school levels here, as well as worked with business people and other professionals at a company called Inlingua (a competitor of Berlitz). Because I have worked in a wide range of environments, I am familiar with a wide range of teaching methods and can easily adapt instruction to suit my students' needs.

A typical class might be conversation- or story-based, or a combination of the two, depending on student preferences. If a student does not yet have a lot of vocabulary, conversation w/ repetition and story-based learning are both helpful. If a student is also interested in grammar, great! I’m happy to weave grammar into lessons, and I always try to do so in a natural, relaxed way and to provide plenty of opportunities for practice using written and spoken exercises. If you prefer to focus purely on conversation and reading, however, that’s okay. For students wanting to focus on conversation, I often provide a menu of topics/themes that might be discussed during a given class, and I come up with questions related to the topics for students to answer if the conversation doesn’t flow on its own. Sometimes we use the materials prepared in advance, sometimes we don’t. No matter what, we have a good time! I believe in active practice. In some ways, speaking a foreign language is a bit like learning to play a musical instrument or training for a sport. It is necessary to listen, repeat, revise, rehearse, improvise, invent, practice, practice, practice! That doesn’t mean practice needs to be perfect. It doesn’t. What matters is embracing and laughing at mistakes in order to use them as learning moments. “Mistakes are a fact of life. It is the response to error that counts.” - Nikki Giovanni With younger students (13 and under), I love working with children’s books and fairy tales in Spanish. At intermediate and higher levels, I like to work with authentic materials including short stories (cuentos), news articles, poems, or fragments of literary texts. If you want to read some historical texts or even a novel in Spanish, we can do that too. I also like to use different media such as videos and music whenever possible. When I prepare lessons, I try to keep in mind the saying “En la variedad está el gusto…” (“Variety is the spice of life”). I hope my students feel welcome to make suggestions and express their preferences about how they want to spend time in class. One goal I have when preparing classes is to keep student feedback in mind and to incorporate it directly and immediately into lesson plans. If you are a short-term student preparing for an assessment (DELE/SIELE, IB, AP, CLEP, SAT II (Spanish Subject Test), OPI), I also have plenty of experience in test preparation and can help you learn and structure your practice time as efficiently as possible. We’ll start by discussing the structure and format of the test if you aren’t already familiar with it/them, and then we’ll do targeted practice to strengthen your areas of weakness to the greatest extent possible. I love meeting new people from all over the world, so please do not be shy about booking a trial lesson. Whether you are looking for a structured plan to reach a specific goal or just interested in informal conversation practice, I'm eager to help you learn Spanish in a way that is comfortable, but also challenging and fun.

Lisa has been teaching me history, language arts, Spanish, and SAT prep. She has always been my favorite tutor and the best one we have encountered. I see a change in my scores and she has always been a comforting and supportive teacher. I’m happy I came across her as I wouldn’t have made it this far as a student!
Thank you Lisa! ️View more recommendations
