Drawing on my academic background in psychology, I bring both passion for the subject and empathy for the challenges students may face. I have experience young and older adults who feel anxious about their grades, offering support with understanding course content, developing study skills and proofreading academic work. I tailor my approach to each individual, ensuring they can learn at their own pace and in ways that make them feel confident in reaching their goals.
I encourage feedback and, where possible, allow students to take the lead in lessons. I also incorporate visual aids and interactive methods to make learning engaging and accessible. For students working on a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD, I focus on strengthening critical thinking skills and producing well-structured, coherent essays.

My academic passion lies in counselling psychology and psychotherapy—particularly psychoanalytic and humanistic approaches, qualitative research, and neurodivergence. While I do not teach statistics, I can support students in writing up their statistical findings. As a trainee counsellor and psychotherapist , I can also bring my understanding of research and therapeutic perspectives into lessons, where this is helpful, to enrich learning and deepen insight.

Find out more about Nicole

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My fascination with psychology stemmed from my A-levels, and since then, I have not stopped learning the subject. Due to my interest in psychology, I decided to tutor after my second MSc. This decision was also influenced by my own understanding of the struggles that a student in psychology can face and my desire to help them. In particular, I wanted to teach students what I wished that teachers had taught me during my undergraduate and master's years to succeed properly.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I can teach in Portuguese, French and English: A-Level Psychology, AP Psychology, Undergraduate and Master's in Psychology. I am particularly good at helping with coursework such as reading essays, reports and dissertations. My goal is to boost the student's critical thinking and develop a well-structured essay. I can also help with university admissions personal statements. As a doctorate student in Counselling Psychology, my research interests are qualitative analysis, psychodynamic psychotherapy and ASD adults. However, I am not very fond of statistics, and even though I can help with writing it up, I cannot teach the subject.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

During my A-levels, I had a psychology teacher whose compassion for the subject inspired me to pursue my BSc in Psychology.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A tutor with patience can think outside the box and is sincere, sympathetic, adjustable and kind.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I got a D in the module 'Brain and Behaviour' in high school. This made me doubt if I could really do psychology for my BSc. Due to the difficulty of the module and having some difficulties with the way that the teacher taught it, I started to conduct mock tests on myself and got myself a tutor. I learned that studying in ways that suit our needs is essential.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I had some challenges with statistic modules and using R-studio during my studies. Even though I still struggle with it, by understanding my limitations and working on them, I can now write up the results and conduct research in a publishable standard.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I have a passion for counselling psychology and psychotherapy, particularly the psychoanalytic and humanistic approaches. As a counsellor trainee, if it is helpful for the student, I could bring my own understanding of research and therapy to the lesson.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I like to tailor my approach to every student by enabling them to learn at their pace and respecting the ways that they feel more confident in achieving their goals. I believe in asking for feedback, allowing the student to lead the classes if they want to, and using visual aids to allow students to learn engagingly.
