About Louie
I am a FIDE Arena International Master with more than 26 years of chess coaching experience and nearly four decades of competitive play. I specialize in helping developing and tournament-minded players understand why positions work — not simply memorize moves. My students learn strategic planning, calculation, pattern recognition, practical decision-making, emotional control and tournament preparation. I work particularly well with students who already love chess and want to make the transition from simply playing games to becoming stronger competitive players. My coaching is highly individualized. We analyze the student’s own games, identify recurring strengths and weaknesses, build practical opening and middlegame understanding, and develop the thinking process required to make better decisions independently over the board. Over the years I have coached children and adults, operated an after-school chess program, prepared students for competitive play, and mentored players who have gone on to win tournaments and improve their ratings. Just as important, I believe chess development should build confidence, curiosity and independent thought. My goal is not simply to give students answers, but to teach them how to discover those answers themselves.

For in-person coaching, I primarily serve the Cerritos–La Palma–Bellflower–Long Beach corridor, with lessons arranged at convenient public locations or other agreed meeting places. Online coaching is also available. Chess is a demanding and highly competitive game that requires strong concentration, emotional control, and creative thinking — truly a “game within a game.” My lessons focus on increasing focus, pattern recognition, and problem-solving skills while helping students become comfortable with core chess ideas and practical decision-making.

Louie is a very knowledgeable and patient chess instructor. I have known Louie professionally and competitively for over 30 years. He ran a successful after school chess program for LAUSD elementary aged students. Parents and students of all skill levels really enjoyed his program. He currently teaches and coaches several private students, many of whom are winning tournaments and raising their chess ratings. I feel that Lou is very trustworthy.
