• When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

  My interest in Maths and Science developed during my high school years, where I found myself captivated by how these subjects explain the world around us. I was fascinated by the logical structure of Maths and the way Science could break down complex phenomena into understandable concepts. My interest in private tutoring began in college when I started helping my peers with these subjects. Watching them grasp difficult concepts and achieve their goals was incredibly fulfilling, which encouraged me to pursue tutoring more seriously.

• Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

  I teach both Maths and Science. In Maths, I particularly enjoy discussing topics like algebra and calculus because they challenge students to think abstractly and develop problem-solving skills. In Science, I love diving into topics like physics and biology, where we can explore the principles that govern life and the universe. However, topics like rote memorization of certain formulas or scientific facts can sometimes be less engaging for students, so I work hard to make these areas more relatable by connecting them to real-world applications.

• Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

  Yes, I had a teacher in high school who deeply inspired me. Their passion for Maths and Science was infectious, and they had a unique way of making even the most challenging concepts accessible and exciting. They not only taught the subjects but also instilled in me a love for learning and an understanding of how these subjects are interconnected with everything in our lives. This inspiration is something I strive to bring to my own students.

• What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

  A good tutor in Maths and Science needs patience, adaptability, and strong communication skills. Patience is essential because these subjects can be challenging, and students often need time to fully grasp the concepts. Adaptability is crucial as every student has their own learning style, and a tutor must be flexible in their approach. Clear communication is key to breaking down complex ideas into understandable parts. Additionally, a good tutor should be supportive, encouraging students to ask questions and build their confidence.

• Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

  During my school days, I once struggled with a particularly tough topic in Maths-trigonometry. It seemed impossible to understand at first. However, a teacher took the time to explain it in a different way, using visual aids and real-life examples. Suddenly, everything clicked for me. This experience taught me the importance of persistence and finding the right approach to learning, a lesson I bring into my tutoring sessions to help students overcome their own challenges.

• What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

  One of the challenges I've faced in Maths and Science is keeping up with the rapid advancements and changes, particularly in Science, where new discoveries are constantly being made. Staying updated requires continuous learning and adaptation. Another challenge is helping students overcome their fear of these subjects. Many students come in with the mindset that Maths and Science are too difficult or beyond their abilities. Breaking down these mental barriers and helping them build confidence is as important as teaching the content itself.

• Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

  My passion lies in helping others discover their potential, especially in Maths and Science. While I'm deeply passionate about these subjects, what truly drives me is seeing students gain confidence and mastery in areas they once found difficult. Beyond teaching, I also have a passion for [mention any other passion], which keeps me balanced and often brings new ideas and perspectives to my tutoring sessions.

• What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

  What makes me a Superprof is my commitment to my students' success in Maths and Science. I go beyond just teaching the material; I work to instill a sense of confidence, curiosity, and enjoyment in these subjects. I'm always seeking new ways to make learning engaging and effective, tailoring my approach to meet each student's unique needs.
