About Irene
I teach students ages 7-14 and older ages in beginner-intermediate technical drawing techniques, helping to improve and build confidence in their skills. I’m currently completing a masters degree in Fine Art at Newcastle University. Previously, I’ve studied art GCSEs and A Levels and I currently work with a range of materials including drawing, painting, and film, so I can advise on these subjects as well if needed! Don’t be afraid to ask!

Every student will be different and as an art tutor, I believe it is most important to establish a rapport and connection with students (especially with younger students) as drawing and painting are subjects that require patience and concentration, thus finding a way to keep students engaged is the key. Although art is a mostly demonstrative subject to teach, it is important to supplement these skills with theory as it helps with accuracy of drawings and behaves as scaffolding for works that are not done from a reference object/photo. Starting from basic technical explanations and demonstrations (such as the classic cube task), these simple exercises help with the understandings of how light hits objects and helps to understand the notions of dimensions, size and scale. The next step would be, learning how to apply these exercises to more complicated drawing subject matters and different styles of shading to achieve different qualities to ultimately help “sculpt” a 3D image from a 2D medium. Although these lessons would be drawing-heavy, I can also give a basic introduction of how to use different types of paints (eg. watercolours/oils) and different methods of painting. And from this, depending on what each student prefers, I can start to teach how to draw and paint portraits, landscapes, animals, etc. We will work together towards your goals - be it just to improve drawing/painting skills, or the fact that you just want to be able to draw your pony or puppy - to make the classes exciting, engaging and dynamic! We will get there! I don’t bite! *please provide your own materials, eg sketchbook, pencils/pens, paint, etc* And finally, thank you for your interest in my profile and feel free to contact me for more information! Covid update: please note that I will be masked during lessons. Just for safety!

Irene is a very patient and reassuring tutor. She was able to adapt her pacing very well and maintain the joy of the subject, even when things got quite technical. I would definitely recommend her!
Irene is an excellent artist, with a multiplicit approach she is capable of flexibly adapting to any drawing style and providing guidance and support. Her innate interest in history of art, philosophy and literature creates a plethora of possibilities to interpret drawings through the prism of a social commentary, so anyone who chooses Irene as their tutor would certainly benefit from her extensive knowledge and passion for artistic expression.
