About Kent
I am a Fine Artist /Illustrator who's philosophy is to respect and exalt Art, Artists and the creative impulse in everyone.
I firmly believe creating art is the most sacred of human enterprises.
My Academic background formally is as follows:
that I graduated from Cornish College Seattle, Washington, USA with a B.F.A in Fine Art in 1984 .
I also attended the University of Washington, Seattle Wa. from 1979-1981.
I have participated in countless group and one man shows in and around the Seattle -Tacoma area from 1977 through to the Present.
I've illustrated a award winning book titled "Clouds for Breakfast"
I was the Scenic Painter at The Drew Harvey Theatre Near Olympia Washington from 1997 through 2005.
I painted many murals in the Olympia area as well.
Although I've taught art classes to all ages- on and off- for nearly 30 years, my primary experience teaching was at the Children's School of Excellence in Rainier Washington from 2005-2008.
My Main interest however has always been the personal Fine Art works I create for myself (and with all the help I can get from the Muses of course). Recording my personal visions and reflections of my lifes experiences is sort of autobiographical, when seen over time. But my hope is that I can just simply, honestly scribe the moment poetically.
Often, I attempt to view my work in context of Art History ( European and North American mostly). This is a important challenge for any artist. I can offer assistance in this to my students when examining their own work with this perspective.
From Figurative Art and various forms of Realism, Surrealism and Fantasy, to Expressionism, and Mimimalism, one can hardly make a make a mark on paper without tapping into Art History, and this can be a added source of power, relevance and inspiration for an artists work. Towards this end, I will work to enhance each artists view of their work with a historical perspective.

I believe in a "tailored" approach to teaching. I modify my classes around s needs and preferences of each artist, based on their individual creative evolution. What this means practically is that I offer a full spectrum of possibilities for class content.,i.e. from highly structured, problem solving exercises such as better draftsmanship and technical renderings, to more open ended, improvisational approaches to learning. This applies as well to our conversations about the philosophical, historical, and conceptual aspects of Art.. And although, I will always encourage a balanced mix of the tradition/structure based classes on the one hand combined with the freer more inspirational, and innovative oriented lesson on the other. Ultimately, it is up to each student to determine what that "right mix" might be and the direction of development desired by the artist as well.
Generally, my own work spans from a Trompe 'l oeil realism and surrealism in technique to a more gestural organic and poetic geometric abstraction. With the bulk of my work residing somewhere in between.
We can explore a variety of mediums. My forte' is in watercolor, acrylic, oils, casein, colored pencils and charcoal, but encaustic, woodcuts and collage are other mediums I've explored as well.
To help you get a better sense of where I hang out stylistically or what genres I appreciate most, here is a list of artists I've been influenced by historically. They're in roughly chronological order and are as follows: Bosch, El Greco, Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Bosch, El Greco, Goya, Poussin, Blake, Holbein, Daumier, Watteau, Turner, Constable, Tenniel, Bemelmans, Monet, Lautrec, Degas,Gauguin, Klimt, De Chirico, Picasso, Modigliani, Magritte, Gorky, Alfred Pinkham Ryder, Benton, Woods, Hopper, Motherwell, O'Keefe and Emily Carr. the Northwest School artists like Mark Tobey, Morris Graves, Charles Stokes and Bill Cumming- (the latter two, I studied under for several years, I'm proud to say).. I should mention too the artists of "the Hairy Who" and the Chicago Imagists-were a big influence.
Hope this helps and I'd love to chat about your goals.
