I am a highly experienced English tutor, educational specialist and public speaking coach with 7+ years of experience. I hold a double first in English Literature from Cambridge University and thrive on harnessing my subject knowledge and enthusiasm to support and inspire students to achieve their goals. Whether it's Oxbridge entry, A-Levels, GSCE, ELAT, coursework or improved subject confidence, I tailor each lesson to the individual and enjoy the reward of seeing both their proficiency flourish. I am dedicated to creating a dynamic learning environment that fosters academic confidence and equips each student with the study skills necessary for independent learning and exam success.
Recent tutoring achievements include: pupil's successful admission to study English at Hertford College, Oxford University (2022); improvement from pupil's grade C to A in AQA A-level (2021), ELAT score of 54, supporting a dyslexic student through GCSA programme.
I am familiar with AQA, OCR, Edexcel. In addition, I also teach the Scottish Advanced Higher and National 5. In our first session together, I find it beneficial to set out aims allowing us to agree on a plan of action that ensures that each student's longer-term goals are realised. I encourage questions and delight in the opportunity to share my enthusiasm.
Parent testimonial:
"Rachel is a hugely intelligent, utterly committed and highly effective tutor who has made a real difference to our daughter's ability to comprehend and analyse English literature texts in only a matter of weeks. My daughter is in her final A level year and we have been working with Rachel in preparation for the Oxbridge ELAT. She has been able to open up new avenues of critical thinking; as well as working on close analysis of the texts themselves for better understanding of form, structure etc, she has also set up a robust checklist system, essay structure advice and suggestions for wider reading to support my daughter. Rachel has high standards and unsurprisingly at the level we are working, expects commitment from her students; her lessons are jam-packed and full of energy so they require real focus, yet delivered in a very kind and supportive manner which has really built our daughters confidence. I cannot recommend Rachel enough; I think we were very lucky to find her"I have experience tutoring students with a range of abilities and thrive on the challenge of creating dynamic and engaging programmes of work which are tailored to the needs of each pupil. Whether the aim is exam improvement, increased concentration or improved engagement, I aim to furnish each pupil with the ability to plan their own study time effectively and efficiently.
Assisting with course-work portfolios and teaching exam technique is an area in which I am well versed. I equip my students with the ability to recognise keywords, break down complex questions and confidently structure answers under time-pressure.
For advanced students who need an extra challenge, I encourage them to ‘question the question’ - a teaching methodology I have developed that enables gifted students to think outside the box and stand out from their peers. To assist with this, I provide guidance on critical theory and offer advice on integrating knowledge of literary context and authorial methods into a well-structured essay.
Success cannot be quantified through results alone. In accordance with this, I adopt a flexible, positive approach that aims to inspire students to work to the best of their abilities and rewards them for their efforts.

I was recommended Rachel for an English tutor through a colleague of my father. Rachel helped me through my A-Level English Literature for two years, helping me with coursework and essay writing. She was calm, reassuring and explained concepts in a way that made me understand the literature better and enjoy the A-level again. I would highly recommend Rachel to anyone needing help in English.
