About Sophia
My name is Sophia and I am a recent English graduate from Queen Mary, University of London. I graduated with a first-class honours, which is a testament to my strong passion for the subject. I have a strong understanding of how to improve in English, having gone from a grade 3 to a grade 9 at GCSE level and having achieved the top grade at A-Level. I find enjoyment and fulfilment in helping students to improve in the subject and I am a strong believer that students require an English teacher whose love for the subject is contagious.

I specialise in English exam preparation for both GCSE level and A-Level. I work with students to broaden their critical analysis of prose and poetry. I go through various language techniques and essay techniques to ensure that they achieve the top grades. Moreover, I have a critical eye for spelling and grammar, making sure that students write with concision and care.
A typical lesson with me will include a starter and a main exercise. The first 5 minutes of the lesson consists of the student analysing a short, unseen piece of prose or poetry. This acts as exam preparation and allows the student to warm up and engage their brain. The next 10 minutes will be used to discuss the student’s annotations and seeing if anything else can be analysed from the extract.
The rest of the 45 minutes will be used to start planning an essay-type question. I utilise past-papers from the exam boards for this task. Together, the student and I will decipher what the question is asking of us and using its key theme to aid our analysis of the extract given. This task is an act of team-work, where I blend discussion with note-taking to maintain optimum productivity and progress for the student.
