About Jamie
About me
I’m a first-class Master’s graduate in Biological Sciences, specialising in Microbiology, with around four years of professional experience in biotechnology and scientific research.
I progressed to Senior Research Scientist, where I worked on a range of scientific projects involving experimental design, laboratory research, data analysis, problem-solving and communicating scientific findings. This experience has given me a strong understanding of Biology beyond the classroom and a real appreciation for how scientific knowledge is developed and applied.
I’m naturally analytical and enjoy breaking down complex problems into simpler, understandable parts. I bring this same approach to tutoring, adapting my explanations to the individual student and helping them develop their understanding rather than relying purely on memorisation.
Why I want to teach
I’ve always enjoyed understanding how biological systems work, and I particularly enjoy explaining scientific concepts to other people.
I want to teach because I know how much difference it can make when a difficult subject is explained in a way that genuinely makes sense. Biology can involve a lot of information to learn, but understanding the underlying principles makes it much easier to retain and apply that knowledge.
My experience as a scientist has also shown me the importance of curiosity, critical thinking and being able to interpret evidence. These are skills that are valuable not only for exams, but for studying science at university and beyond.
I’d like to use my academic and professional experience to help students become more confident in Biology, improve their exam performance and, ideally, develop the same curiosity about science that led me to pursue it as a career.

My approach
My approach is centred on helping students understand science rather than simply memorise it.
I primarily teach Biology, Chemistry and Physics at GCSE level. Having studied all three sciences at A level, alongside a first-class Master’s degree in Biological Sciences specialising in Microbiology, I have a strong academic foundation across the sciences and can support students with confidence in each subject.
I start by identifying the topics and concepts a student finds most challenging, then break them down into clear, manageable ideas. Once the underlying concept is understood, we apply it to exam-style questions so the student learns how to use their knowledge in unfamiliar situations.
I place particular emphasis on exam technique, scientific reasoning and interpreting experimental data. We will look not only at what the correct answer is, but also why it is correct and how to structure an answer to maximise marks.
I also adapt each lesson to the individual student. Some students may need to strengthen their fundamental knowledge, while others may understand the content but struggle to apply it under exam conditions. My aim is to identify that difference quickly and focus our time where it will have the greatest impact.
As a Senior Research Scientist with a first-class Master’s degree in Biological Sciences, specialising in Microbiology, I can bring real-world scientific experience into lessons, particularly in Biology. Combined with my A-level study of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, this allows me to explain concepts clearly while showing how scientific principles connect across different subjects and are investigated and applied in research.
Ultimately, my goal is to help students become more confident, independent and effective learners, giving them the understanding and problem-solving skills they need to tackle GCSE science questions for themselves.
