About Beth
I am a professional writer and full-time tutor, specialising in English and History with a high success rate for students looking at top schools and universities. I have been giving lessons over the past thirteen years alongside my writing career, with students winning a multitude of essay awards, competitions and places in schools such as Westminster, St Pauls and Harrow and universities such as Oxford, Cambridge and UCL . I have also tutored pupils for the full 2 years of their GCSEs and A-levels, leading them to achieve all 8s and 9s. In 2017 I achieved a Quaker Youth Work Recognition Award and a Facilitation and Leadership qualification for facilitating children's discussion groups and clerking youth groups- often involving organising creative activities and sparking discussion. I am dedicated and passionate about helping my students to succeed and always love learning as much from them as they do from me.
At Oxford I was lucky to achieve a first, coming second in my year overall, and specialising in post-war British history & theory of politics (I.e. Hobbes, Rousseau, Locke, Rawls). As a writer I have acted as the editor for The Lemming magazine for the past five years, am currently publishing my first book of essays and am in the process of finishing a novel. I write for various publications and literary journals such as ID, Hard of Hearing, the Writing Cooperative and Hideous Mink.

I'm a highly experienced tutor and Oxford university first class graduate, specialising in tutoring English language and literature and History from Key Stage 1 to A-level standard, alongside politics, debate, IELTS and 11+ English.
I have extensive tutoring experience from over the past 13 years and have been tutoring full time for the past 2 years with a high success rate of students entering their first choice of school and university, winning awards, prizes and commendations in essay writing (such as the Townsend Warner History Prize and Hong Kong Medical University Essay Prize) and achieving high grades in their GCSE, IELTS and A level exams.
My aim is always to give the students what they do not receive at school in terms of one-to-one focus and depth of understanding- I want them to walk away from my lessons with a breadth of knowledge that encompasses everything from the subject they are studying to philosophy, theory, big ideas and methodology. I am super energetic and enthusiastic about learning; I advocate discussion and debate with analysis of literature, encouraging the student to form alternative and personal interpretations to get under the skin of texts and source material. I try to always get students to think originally and critically, fostering skills early on that they will use throughout their educational lives. I am open to suggestion by the student themselves concerning the direction of the lessons and will shape the lessons around each student's needs.
I believe students' education should be rounded and whole, and bring all my experience in tutoring and education to help them see the world in different ways and from all kinds of perspectives. As a professional writer, I am also a huge advocate of teaching students how to write to a very high standard at an early stage in life, introducing them to ideas about how we can structure and communicate ideas most effectively. My lessons are fun, energised and original and I teach classes from between one to eight students if required.
I have been tutoring for most of my life, having set up a tutoring group that ran for 6 years from when I was thirteen, teaching classes of around five or six 10-11 year olds in 11+, English, maths, verbal and non-verbal reasoning. I had a 100% success rate, with all of my pupils going on to their 1st choice of school and passing their 11+ exams. My GCSE and A-level students have all gone on to achieve grades A*-A and my IELTS students have both achieved Band 8.5-9. I am dedicated and passionate about helping my students to succeed and I always love learning as much from them as they do from me.

One of the best tutors I have ever worked with, I am constantly in awe of the way Beth is able to take a student who is struggling and turn them into a star pupil. She is thoughtful, passionate, and incredibly intelligent, explaining complex concepts to students in a way that just makes it make sense! She is a pleasure to work with and comes highly recommended- such an inspiring person and with so much dedication and experience.
Beth tutored my son in GCSE English Literature and Language and he improved from achieving a Grade 6 in his mock exams to a Grade 9 in his final exams! Thanks to Beth he is now studying English Literature, History and Politics at A Level with hopes of becoming a lawyer! He couldn’t have done it without Beth’s help, and I thoroughly recommend her to any fellow parents!
She tutored my daughter ( age 11) and three of her schoolmates through the 11+ She prepared the lessons and delivered them every week for several months. She was patient, thorough and excellent at explaining all facets of the test. Three of the four children passed the 11+ and got into the school of their choice. She is highly intelligent.
Beth tutored me for 11+ a few years ago and the sessions were fun but also ultimately very useful, as she helped me to get into the selective private school I'm in now. She did the same for a few more of my friends. I always loved her lessons and learned a lot! If it weren't for her I don't think I would have passed my entrance exam!
