Find out more about Pounamu

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I speak te reo fluently because I grew up learning the language. My native tongue is a big part of who I am.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

I believe that Timoti Karetu is my emblematic representative as he embodies the values of the language, he is also an icon in Te Ao Māori.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

I love how poetic te reo Māori is. The way of my culture with the language included opens a new and wider perspective on life.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

I feel that I have a responsibility to honour my tūpuna and carry out our native language as best I can.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

I believe learning and truly understanding this language requires one to completely change their view of language. I have noticed that the transition from English to Te Reo Māori is especially difficult due to the very different natures of the two languages.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

I often practised giving formal speeches in te reo Māori during my school breaks. The language was considered to be a part of each and every student and so it was very common for students to pursue excellence in this language outside of general school commitments.
  • ow has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Travelling Aotearoa has allowed me to understand that Māori iwi (tribes) are incredibly unique and special in their own right. The same can be said for te reo Māori and the different adaptations that each iwi has. A similar learning can be attained by listening to the similarities of the Pacific island languages.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

My passion for Te Reo Māori makes me a Superprof. I have been learning this language for many years, and have been fluent for many years also. However, I still pursue new learnings within this language because I am passionate about learning and teaching.
