About Margot
I am currently in Year 13 at a Grammar School and am studying History, Geography, Politics and English Literature and have a qualification in Theory of Knowledge.
I have been tutoring students for 3 years now and have had great success with this. My greatest achievements include students progressing in GCSE English Literature and Language from achieving Level 5 (C Grade) to consistent Level 8's (A* grade).
Furthermore, I have expanded my tutoring abilities by also teaching an A Level Politics Student who has gone from a C grade to an A in their most recent set of exams.
As well as my experience specifically in tutoring exam content, I have a number of extracurricular activities which further improve my suitability for the role. I personally formed a Law Society at my school which has allowed me to have consistent interactions with the younger years, advising on personal statements and work experience. This has taught me the best means of communication and methods of improvement in all areas of school life and exam work.

My teaching style is suitable for all ages and abilities. My methods will be tailored to each student however, the most effective techniques I use include exemplar essays, constructive feedback, marked work, concise notes and regular knowledge retrieval exercises.
It is most important to me that I build a good rapport with my students, allowing me to fully understand their individual needs and therefore cater my lessons specifically for them.
An example of a lesson structure which has been very successful for me in previous experience includes:
- A brief starter to the topic and a knowledge retrieval exercise from the last topic covered
- Then a period of teaching of new content, allowing for a question and answer format, in which the student can resolve any queries
- After this process, I test how well the student has retained this new content through a process of questioning which forms a mid lesson mini plenary
- Then I find it essential, especially if the student is seeking to improve a specific exam board grade, to target this content towards answering exam style questions
- Finally, in order to continue the learning process until the next session, an exam question or task will be set as homework which will be marked and form initial feedback for the next lesson. This can be included as part of a series of formative assessments.
Lastly, I think it is important to mention that this is a standard approach that I would take, however a parent's or children's specific requests are essential in making tutoring as successful as possible and will be incorporated into this format.

Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor
Margot is a very talented tutor who has supported and developed my son’s knowledge and understanding. She understands the needs of her students and plans appropriate activities. Margot has inspired my son to engage in her sessions when he can be a reluctant learner. She understands the importance of differentiation and use of questioning to ensure that students have grasped the concepts and can apply them effectively. I would highly recommend her.
I can wholeheartedly recommend Margot Hodgkinson as a tutor. She has tutored my grandson in A' Level Politics. He had lost interest in the subject and was facing a low A' level grade. Margot was able to reignite his interest through her love of her subject and her motivational skills. He is now likely to achieve a grade A.
Margot is kind and patient but very firm and well organised. She sets clear targets that have to be met. She checked my grandson's prior knowledge and identified the gaps in his learning. Her tutorials were well structured with detailed lesson plans. My grandson gained a range of study techniques and his essay planning became much more effective. This boosted his confidence.
Margot has extensive knowledge of her subject and is able to explain complex topics with great clarity. She can distil the essence of a problem under discussion and encourages active participation.
Margot's positive, enthusiastic approach must resonate well with the young people she tutors.I met Margot a couple of years ago when I was struggling to maintain focus and interest in lessons, resulting in a drastic decrease in the quality of my grades. She not only motivated me with positive reinforcement but also endeavored to support my learning in whichever way possible. Margot's approachability and enthusiasm for learning inspired me to follow in her success. Her lessons are effective and efficient, allowing the opportunity for immense improvement within short periods of time. With only a few hours of work 1-on-1, my politics grades skyrocketed from a D to an A. I cannot recommend Margot highly enough. She is an outstanding student, teacher, and person who will ensure success at any level and reintroduce the excitement of learning.
