About Tesher
My name is Tesher Baer, and I am a fourth-year student at the University of Virginia, where I study French and Global Security & Justice with minors in Data Science and Government. I am an Echols Scholar and Civic Cornerstone Fellow.
My academic and professional experience has taken me beyond the classroom and into French-speaking environments, including research and fieldwork in Strasbourg, France. There, I worked on French-language materials, engaged with administrative systems, and conducted research related to the French prison system. This experience strengthened both my fluency and my ability to use French in professional and academic contexts.
In addition to my studies, I have experience in writing, editing, and research through roles with academic journals and policy-oriented organizations. I have also worked as a tutor and mentor, supporting students in developing communication and language skills in structured learning environments.
Across all of these experiences, I have developed a strong foundation in clear communication, analytical thinking, and teaching through feedback and collaboration—skills I bring into every tutoring session.

My lessons are designed to help students move from understanding French in theory to actually using it confidently in practice.
Each session is tailored to the student’s level, goals, and current coursework. For students enrolled in French classes, we can focus on homework support, grammar reinforcement, exam preparation, and improving writing clarity and accuracy. For independent learners, lessons are structured around building conversational fluency, strengthening listening and reading comprehension, and developing practical vocabulary for real-world situations.
A typical lesson includes a brief review of previous material, targeted instruction on a key grammar or language concept, and guided practice through speaking, writing, or comprehension exercises. We then apply what we’ve learned through conversation or structured activities, followed by clear takeaways and optional practice for the week.
My approach emphasizes understanding how French works rather than memorizing isolated rules. I focus on helping students recognize patterns, think in the language, and build confidence using French actively rather than passively recognizing it. Interacting with French as it if were your native language is the best way to pick up on all the little nuances that are missed in a traditional classroom setting.
Lessons are interactive, supportive, and structured to ensure steady progress over time.
