About Martha

I’m a practising artist who graduated in 2023 with an MA in Fine Art from City & Guilds Art School. Alongside my practice, I run a podcast exploring the connection between art and wellbeing.

I lead online painting clubs focused on contemporary artists, teach within the adult education sector, and offer both group classes and 1:1 tuition for adults and children. My teaching is centred on building confidence, curiosity, and individual creative voice, whether you’re a complete beginner or developing a more advanced practice.

I have over six years of teaching experience across a range of settings. I began by running creative workshops for adults experiencing mental health challenges, which shaped my belief in art as a powerful tool for wellbeing. I then trained as a secondary school teacher, gaining three years of experience teaching GCSE and A-Level art. During this time, I supported students in achieving excellent results, including a GCSE cohort that achieved the highest grades in the school.

My background began in technical sculpture for film and theatre during my undergraduate degree, before I discovered my passion for fine art. This combination of technical skill and conceptual thinking continues to inform both my own work and my teaching approach.

Alongside my ongoing practice, I continue to teach adult classes and tutor younger students, which I find incredibly rewarding.

My teaching is tailored to your individual interests, goals, and experience level. During our first session, we’ll discuss what you’d like to develop and create a personalised learning plan that supports your creative growth.

I teach a wide range of art disciplines, from observational drawing and painting to abstraction, mixed media, and sculpture using air-dry clay. Whether your goal is to build strong technical foundations, develop your own artistic style, or simply reconnect with creativity, lessons are designed to meet you where you are.

When teaching drawing, I encourage students to simplify what they see into basic shapes and forms. This helps train your eye to draw what is actually in front of you, rather than what your brain assumes should be there. Developing these foundational observational skills gives you the freedom to work confidently across any style- whether realism, abstraction, or something in between.

Alongside technical skill-building, we work on developing imagination, experimentation, and confidence in your own creative decisions. We’ll explore both historical and contemporary artists to deepen your understanding of visual language and provide inspiration for your own practice.

A big part of my teaching is creating a supportive environment where mistakes are welcomed as an essential part of learning. Building trust and helping students feel at ease is central to my approach, as confidence and resilience are key to artistic development.

Lessons take place in my fully equipped studio, with all materials provided. I can also host small group sessions for up to four people, with discounted rates available for group bookings.
