About Rakesh
I am a university lecturer, practising artist and curator with over 10 years’ experience at leading UK art universities, teaching students from Foundation to Masters. I hold a Masters in Photography, a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (Distinction) and I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I am currently teaching fine art at Camberwell, photography at LCC and art history at Westminster. Furthermore I have mentored A-Level students progressing into creative degrees and careers. My work has been selected for the National Portrait Gallery and the Royal Photographic Society, and for two years I was a photography competition judge for the Royal Overseas League. In my personal fine art practice I work with a variety of mediums including clay, collage and photography. I also work with dance both classical and contemporary. I am the co-founder of pic.london, an organisation to support early career artists through workshops and exhibiting opportunities. I also run a collage group at the Walworth Living Room and a theory reading group called Image Assembly. In my spare time I am part of an open drawing club and a sculpture group that I formed with other artists and educators. References available on request.

I met Rakesh while studying abroad at the University of Westminster, where I took a three-week intensive photography course and had him as my tutor.
I really enjoyed his teaching style and appreciated how he went out of his way to ensure we were immersed in London’s art culture. We visited a range of galleries and museums, and he explained the exhibitions clearly and thoughtfully.
I highly recommend Rakesh as a tutor. He is patient, knowledgeable, and deeply passionate about what he teachesI met Rakesh as one of the lecturers during my MA. He tutored me on one of my MA projects, which developed into my strongest piece. I enjoyed his teaching a lot, he gave insightful feedback and expanded recommendations on references, which allowed me to explore a broader range of approaches and able to further reflect my academic practice. Beyond academic support, he is also very generous with his knowledge of the art industry and his professional experience. After my graduation, he shared valuable insights and experiences in running a collective, networking, and working as an independent artist. This helped me gain a much clearer understanding of the industry and helped me notice many things I hadn’t previously considered in terms of career planning. 5-star recommendation.
I met Rakesh 4 years ago in a clay modelling class and I had no idea how much he would transform my thoughts on creativity and what I am capable of achieving. I had just retired and was keen to use this new time to develop my suppressed creative skills. Rakesh encouraged me to work regularly on various sculpture projects.
He has prompted me to raise my bar and fully explore ideas from other artists and then back in the studio develop those thoughts into pieces to express my own thoughts and emotions. Prior to our meeting, I would never have had the courage to walk into a museum or private gallery, engage with staff and spend time slowly absorbing artworks through creative response in the gallery itself. Without his encouragement and skills in the art world, I would never have been able to work in 3D as extensively as I am now doing. It has made me hungry to learn more and I have been able to utilise these new skills in so many ways even outside my world of art. He has taught me to be brave and on one occasion, when I was preparing something to submit for a competition, challenged some of my thinking and guided me to produce a better application. I truly believe without his considered feedback I would never have been shortlisted for the prize.
I would thoroughly recommend him as a tutor to support navigating and getting the most out of your creative ambitions and future.During my undergraduate studies at UAL, I had the opportunity to work with Rakesh as my one-to-one tutorial tutor. I genuinely enjoyed every tutorial session with him. Rakesh has an exceptional ability to understand the specific nature of individual projects, and he consistently provided insightful references that were highly relevant to my research direction. His guidance helped me identify precise and effective ways to push my work forward.
In the later stages of my dissertation, Rakesh continued to support my research process with remarkable consistency. He closely followed the development of my investigation, and throughout our conversations he was able to open new pathways for exploration, even within the limits of my existing knowledge. His approach encouraged me to think critically, expand my frames of reference, and refine my methodology.
Working with Rakesh greatly shaped the way I approach research and art practice. His guidance was both rigorous and inspiring, and I’m very grateful for the clarity and confidence he helped me gain in my work.Rakesh helped me with my school art project. My school teacher gave me a brief and I was stuck for ideas on what to create. The brief was to create an artwork based on a famous sculpture and I was stressed about it! Rakesh made me realise I could just use things I had around my house and he helped me to come up with some amazing suggestions, which helped me come up with the final piece and how to make it. He helped me learn independently while also giving me guidance. My school teacher gave me the award for the best in my class. I highly recommend Rakesh as he is a wonderful tutor!
Professor Rakesh taught my art history class during my semester abroad at Westminster. I had been pursuing a BA in Fine Arts for three years and I rarely had classes that were as intellectually stimulating as his. Professor Rakesh made my experience in London unforgettable, taking the class to different art galleries around the city and encouraging students to actively participate during the visits. It is evident that Rakesh knows the art scene in London exceptionally well and that he has expertise on his field and many more. Through our final assignment, a journal on all the gallery visits we made, I was able to make connections between exhibitions and different art periods, while also learning about contemporary artists and their subject matters. I would choose Professor Rakesh again if I had the chance and recommend him to anyone looking to deepen their understanding of prominent artistic themes and media.
I learned photography from Rakesh in London and had an absolutely brilliant time. Even though I myself do not focus on photography now, learning about different things like the rule of thirds, composition, positioning, and more really helped me with my digital art. Rakesh taught these things brilliantly in a way that was easy to understand and always made sure we had some hands on experience to apply our studies to. Anyone would be lucky to learn photography from him!
