About Viktoria

Viktória Šinkorová is a composer, classical guitarist, improviser and early researcher from Slovakia, who collaborates extensively with other musicians, dancers and filmmakers. Her curiosity around literacy, oral traditions and language led her to explore new relations between language and composition. She leans heavily on theory surrounding Authorship (Barthes) and Intertextuality (Kristeva), which has led her to explore more expansive interpretations of the established boundaries of symbols and signs. Viktória manifests this approach in her work exemplifying her interest in the complexities in notating composed and improvised music within a single format employing what she terms interweaves.

Viktória obtained her Batchelor’s degree in 2021 in Perfomance and Composition from Middlesex University, London (MDX), and is the recipient of the University’s Turton Prize for outstanding academic achievements. Since graduating, she has continued her studies in composition with John Buckley, and classical guitar and improvisation with Benjamin Dwyer. During her studies in London she became very interested in contemporary music and free improvisation, which led her to join university’s free improvisation ensemble-in-residence at Middlesex University, Scorched Earth, and she has been the director since 2019. She participated in New Pathways in (concealed information) which is a live and live-streamed conference-performance event, presenting a paper on her ongoing research on the liminal spaces of notated and improvised music. This presentation included the world premiere performance by Scorched Earth of her composition After Dowland. In July 2022, she took part in the Irish Compositional Summer School guest directed by Ed Bennett and Ann-Marie O’Farrell.

Viktória is currently studying at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm where she is undertaking the European Master Degree in Contemporary Performance and Composition ‘CoPeCo’, which is two-year program where each semester takes place in a different institution: Eesti Muusika- ja Teatriakadeemia (Tallinn, Estonia), Kungliga Musikhögskolan (Stockholm, Sweden), Conservatoire National Supérieur Musique et Danse (Lyon, France) and Hochschule für Musik und Theater (Hamburg, Germany). She was awarded the Erasmus and Nordplus grands to support her studies.

In addition to her creative work, Viktória has been working as production assistant for Viva Musica! Festival, which is the biggest summer festival of classical music in Slovakia. She is also head administrator of New Pathways in (concealed information)

Her research has focussed on leading composer-improvisors Nick Roth, Benjamin Dwyer, Barry Guy, Jenn Kirby and Charlotte Hug, with whom she has conducted one-to-one interviews. She has performed free improvisation sessions with Dwyer, Hug, Roth, Kirby and Olesya Zdorovetska among others.
