About Joe

I have a BA in biology and a minor in education from UC Berkeley. I have a PhD in ecology and evolutionary biology from UC Santa Cruz. I have worked for an elite tutoring company for several years and have also worked in many low-income/disadvantaged school districts helping students master standardized college admissions tests. I've also helped many high school and college students with general math skills, genetics, AP biology, and AP Environmental Studies courses. I am a college professor specializing in inquiry-based field studies in biology and other environmental sciences. I truly care about my students as people and am very invested in helping them solve their problems and reach their academic goals.

About the lesson

My lessons are responsive to student needs and concerns. I rely on my empathy for student concerns and my years of experience as an educator to dynamically adjust each lesson to focus on the the most urgent and consequential impediment to student progress. A typical lesson will start with checking on a student's recent self-study or practice with the topic, including their recent struggles. We may then review that work and use it as a spring board to a lesson that explores the relevant topics and techniques to master the topic. I have worked with students whose test scores range from 30th to 98th percentile on SATs and ACTs and I am an expert at adapting my approach and lessons to suit student needs.

Joe was an SAT tutor for my daughter. He not only helped to improve her score but he somehow made SAT tutoring enjoyable! My daughter reached her goal score, improving dramatically, and she enjoyed her sessions because of Joe's sense of humor and relateability. We returned to Joe when my son was ready to take the SAT. We would never consider another tutor - he is the best!

Joe has been a great tutor for both of our sons. He came highly recommended, and our experience has been positive as well. Joe first worked with our older son for SAT prep, and our son was able to raise his score significantly. Joe also worked with our younger son on math and helped him tremendously. Joe makes students feel comfortable. He is very knowledgeable, and explains the subjects in a way that is easy to understand. Joe is very reliable, always showing up in time. He was very fair with his time. We compared Joe to other tutor services, and feel that we got an excellent value. We enjoyed meeting Joe and working with him. He was very friendly, and helped us understand our sons education needs so that we could work with them better as well
