About Colby
I graduated with a degree in mathematics from Florida State University, and I have been working consistently as a math tutor and math teacher since my junior year of high school. I have a wealth of experience, more than a decade, and a mastery of my subject that comes from enjoying it, working with it, and thinking about it most of my life. Going by student and supervisor feedback, I have had solid success, and I still love it after all this time.

I start out most lessons with a greeting and some short ice-breaking talk with the student. From there, I get right into confirming what they are working on, checking on what they have tried so far, and asking about any initial confusions with direct questions. We then work together on the problem step by step with each step fully explained where needed. I prefer to ask the student's opinion on what to do next to keep them engaged, and I like using analogies where appropriate to explain unfamiliar concepts when we run into them. If possible, I also like to try to get the student to summarize what we did or try another practice problem to see how well they understood what we did.
I have experience working with students of most levels, from middle school up to undergrad university, and in nearly all areas of mathematics included, from basic algebra and arithmetic to calculus, statistics, and logic. As a result, I have a lot of practice of changing tactics and methods depending on the student.
As a tutor and teacher, I am very patient and friendly and capable of explaining questions and methods in multiple different ways. I also do my best to inject some humor to keep things light.
