About Jonathan
As an instructor I have a passion for all things science. I have always enjoyed learning. I am always reading new research, especially in biology. I enjoy teaching and do my best to make the subjects I teach as clear as possible. I will work to help anyone understand the "tough" topics.

As an online tutor my teaching method is somewhat dictated by the computer interface. I like to provide a clear lesson plan, sometimes with bits missing that we fill in together. I utilize as many visual diagrams, photos, and models as I can. The following is a lesson plan I created for a biological statistics class: The Effect of Music on Heart Rate Middle School Lab on Experimental design and analyzing statistical data. Partially adapted from Music and heart rate variability. Study of the effect of music on heart rate variability in healthy adolescents. (Escher J, Evequoz D) Purpose: The purpose of this lab is for students to become familiar with experimental design. Students should be able to make predictions and think of ways to test those predictions. They should also have an understanding of the importance of analyzing their results using statistics and graphs. Standard: South Carolina Academic Standards and Performance Indicators for Science: 7.S.1A.1 Ask questions to (1) generate hypotheses for scientific investigations, (2) refine models, explanations, or designs, or (3) extend the results of investigations or challenge claims. 7.S.1A.2 Develop, use, and refine models to (1) understand or represent phenomena, processes, and relationships, (2) test devices or solutions, or (3) communicate ideas to others. 7.S.1A.3 Plan and conduct controlled scientific investigation to answer questions, test hypotheses, and develop explanations: (1) formulate scientific questions and testable hypotheses, (2) identify materials, procedures, and variables, (3) select and use appropriate tools or instruments to collect qualitative and quantitative data, and (4) record and represent data in an appropriate form. Use appropriate safety procedures. Materials: • Two finger heart-rate monitors for each table. • Earbuds or headphones (2 per table) Procedures: 1. Separate into tables of 4-5, assign the students each a number to keep clear records. 2. Have the students pair up. 3. Have one student be the test subject and the other be the researcher. 4. The test student should listen to classical music on earbuds or headphones for 2 minutes at which time the research student will take their heart rate and record it on a sheet of paper. 5. At this point they can switch roles and test classical music again until everyone is finished. 6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 with heavy metal music in place of classical. 7. Once everyone has been tested and heart rates are recorded compile all of the data as a class. 8. At this point give a short lecture on using statistics to make sense of their results with emphasis on paired t-tests and column charts. Explain how significance is found with a 95% confidence interval. 9. Give a demonstration of how to make a column chart in Excel with error bars and run a t-test. 10. Have a discussion on whether their predictions were supported and how the experiment could be improved. (i.e. Minimizing error by conducting the study blind and using a control etc.) Inquiry level: This lab is Direct Inquiry as we are providing the question and procedure but asking the students to analyze the data and reach a conclusion based on said data.
