What is the square of 45?
Trick:
Use the identity . Here, think of as .
So,
45^2 = (50 - 5)^2 = 50^2 - 2(50)(5) + 5^2
50^2 = 2500, \quad 2(50)(5) = 500, \quad 5^2 = 25
45^2 = 2500 - 500 + 25 = 2025
