About Ilana

I grew up on a Southwest Queensland grazing property in the outback. My schooling was distance education until I was 11 years old and then I was sent to boarding school for six years. Reading and writing are my passion and I enjoy sharing knowledge and seeing my students grow in confidence and competence in their comprehension and writing. I do try to inspire students' curiosity and to explore topics in depth rather than just skim the surface. I want to support those students that need support in their learning and will scaffold work tasks that they have been set at their school or college/TAFE courses. We will work together on analysis of texts, creative response to texts and more formalized reports and essay writing. My main focus is to inspire students to fulfill their potential and beyond whether they are a primary student who needs help with reading and writing or a more advanced student who needs support with a text analysis at a Secondary School or tertiary level in written responses to text on novels or film or documentaries.

About the lesson

Lessons are tailored to student needs. Supporting students with learning challenges and helping other students refine and hone their comprehension and writing skills are what I excel at doing. With 35 years of teaching experience in NSW, Victoria and overseas in Israel I have taught a wide range of students. My specialty training is ESL (English as a Second Language). Overseas, I taught students where English was their third or fourth language. I have taught Arabic speakers, French speakers, Hebrew speakers and Russian speakers from the ABC Alphabet level to Tertiary classes for students taking courses at Universities outside of Israel and the Territories: UNISA - University of South Africa, Champlain College - USA etc. They were usually taking courses in Hospitality, Business and Finance, Health and Security Services. I also taught conversational skills to Banking and Reception Staff of Private businesses. I was often required to do small groups, as well as one to one in specialized speaking and conversational skills. Discussion and exchange of ideas are important aspects of any learning program. I encourage students to form their own opinions on a wide range of topics, validating their sources of information and ensuring that research is based on valid premises and is scientifically sound. I assess students' goals and learning needs in the first lesson to tailor a course of study which will be supportive of their main goal whether it is to improve their reading and expressive spoken or written skills or build confidence in their learning and abilities.
