About Katherine

Violist and Violinist Katherine Chernyak has played on stages throughout the United States, Europe, and China. Born in Ontario, Canada, she received her bachelor's degrees in biology and violin performance at Bard College and Conservatory. Presently based in New York City, she is a student at the Juilliard School under the tutelage of Carol Rodland. Katherine has been fortunate to have performed in venues like Carnegie Hall, MET Museum in New York, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, National Cathedral in DC, and Ravinia Festival in Chicago. Katherine is an alum of many summer music programs such as Kneisel Hall, Bowdoin International Music Festival, and Colorado College Summer Music Festival. Passionate about orchestral playing, she is a substitute player with the Orchestra Now and is a participant of the New York City Orchestra Project, bringing high-quality orchestra concerts to audiences in New York City. She has played under the batons of Marin Alsop, Joseph Young, JoAnn Falletta, Tan Dun, and more. As a chamber musician, Katherine has been coached by talented musicians like Laurie Smukler, Ronald Copes, Itamar Zorman, Brian Hong, Raman Ramakrishnan, and more. Katherine won the Binghamton Youth Symphony Concerto Competition and played solo in their winter concert in 2020, was a finalist in the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Concerto Competition (2026) and the Lowell Chamber Orchestra Competition (2026), and received Honorable Mention in the Yamaha Young Artist Competition (2026). She enjoys playing contemporary music and has worked with notable composers like Joan Tower, Xinyan Li, as well as debuting new music in Bard’s Contemporary Jazz Composers’ Ensemble and Cope Collective in New York City. In the summer of 2025, Katherine joined the East West Ensemble on their first tour to China, performing in seven cities with a diverse program of music ranging from pieces by Zhou Long to Antonio Vivaldi.
