About Katey
Hello!
I am a graduate student at the University of Vermont, studying data science. Between my present studies and my undergraduate degree in mathematics, I am a verified math geek! I finished undergrad with a 3.73 GPA and I currently have a 3.77 GPA in grad school, so you can be rest assured I know what I'm doing when it comes to all things math (anything outside of math is questionable tbh).
I am eager to help other math students as a tutor because I know from lots of personal experience, math is difficult and having someone to work with in a one-on-one setting can make a world of difference. Sometimes, you just need the same concept explained in three different ways and that's okay. Math teachers do their best but it's hard to teach 20+ kids using the same explanation and expect all of them to understand it, so I want to fill in those gaps where needed.
Outside of math, my interests include rock climbing, snowboarding, juggling, my roommate's dog, and playing for UVM's Quidditch team.

Hello!
I'm a current graduate student studying data science with a bachelor's degree in math at the University of Vermont. I'm willing to work with students in middle and high school as well as college students in introductory courses. I plan to work remotely, but if you live near Burlington, I'm willing to meet in-person.
I can help with anything from pre-algebra through calculus three. Typically, I will work with each student to identify what they need help with, whether that's covering a topic in general, figuring out tricky homework problems, or preparing for an exam.
I also want to provide "soft skills" for students i.e. explaining HOW to study math, note taking strategies, how to approach difficult problems, what to do when you get stuck, etc.
One of the trickiest things about math is that different people don't always understand it the same way so you have to be prepared to explain the same concept in multiple ways until it clicks. It's also one of those subjects where things sometimes don't click until you've covered it a bunch of times and that's okay. The biggest myth about math that I've ever encountered is that people who are "good" at math get the correct answer on the first attempt and don't need to ask for help. In my experience, from middle school all the way through graduate school, the kids who are getting the best grades are the ones who ask the most questions, spend the most time at extra help sessions, or get help from outside school.
Math is hard, but it can also be manageable and (for the truly nerdy folks in the room) enjoyable.
