About Malda
I am attuned to every learner's needs and skill level. I always begin by asking what a student wants to learn, and why. Once we can identify those things, we can tailor-make lessons based on their interests. I do check-ins to see how the student is feeling and thinking about where they are at in their day, or during the lesson. If they are feeling tired or nervous, then I want to make sure that I am sensitive to what they're going through. I am punctual and expect the same commitment from students. As a practicing artist with 15 years of experience, I have exhibited in many galleries in the US and in Dubai, and have a breadth of knowledge in different areas of art. I want learners to feel confident that they can bring out the artist in them, as we are all creative and this is an essential skill to have for life, whether or not we become artists.

As a tutor, I believe in fluid and experimental ways of learning and making. I begin with drawing as an important tool of understanding how to look at the world around us, with all the objects, colors, shapes, and lines that surround us.
A typical lesson plan involves a lot of free exercises using different drawing tools, such as pencil, pen, marker, and pastel. We will explore confident line and mark making through abstract drawings until students become comfortable with letting go of their perceived notions of what they want to draw. We will do several exercises of these which are referred to as iterations; iterations are important as students will come to learn and see how a drawing develops over several tries. After that, we will start to look at objects around us to make a drawing. Taking the example of a chair, we will begin by drawing what we see (the chair), and not what we think we see, which is the image symbol of a chair in our minds. I break down this process by asking students to extract the shapes that the chair includes, like circles, rectangles, triangles and lines. Everything around us is made up of these basic shapes. Once we can identify these shapes, the drawing becomes easier and we begin to connect the dots.
What sets me apart as a tutor is my vast experience and practice in art which not only includes drawing, but also painting, sculpture and performance. I am punctual and have a generally relaxed attitude, however I demand seriousness and excellence from students when they are showing up to a lesson and the assignments they are working on.
I am interested in teaching any level, preferably middle school and above as we begin to harness the skill of creativity and art that will stay with them for a lifetime.
