My Approach to Tutoring Chinese My teaching philosophy is centred on one core belief: every student is unique, and so should their learning journey be. Having learnt Chinese myself from scratch while living in China for 17 years, I understand the challenges and joys of this process intimately. This personal experience, combined with my formal teaching experience, allows me to be not just a teacher, but a supportive guide for my students. 1. My Techniques & Teaching Methodology My methodology is flexible, patient, and student-centred, built on three key pillars: Personalisation is Key: There is no "one-size-fits-all" method. Before we start, I will discuss your goals (e.g., conversation, business, travel). I then design a personalised learning plan that matches your interests, learning style, and pace. Balanced Skill Development: I ensure all core language skills—speaking, listening, reading, and writing—are developed in a balanced way. However, I prioritise conversational practice from the very first lesson to build your confidence and ability to use the language in real-life situations. Interactive & Engaging Learning: I believe learning should be enjoyable. My lessons are interactive and use a variety of materials: Real-life Scenarios: Role-playing conversations you'd actually have (e.g., ordering food, travelling, socialising). Multimedia Resources: Using videos, songs, and short articles to make lessons dynamic. Practical Grammar: I teach grammar in a simple, practical way, avoiding overly complex explanations. 2. Typical Length of a Lesson Standard Lesson: 50 minutes. This is the ideal length to cover new material, practise it thoroughly, and have a meaningful conversation without feeling rushed. Shorter Option: 30-minute sessions are available for younger children or for focused conversational practice. Longer Option: 90-minute sessions can be arranged for intensive learning. 3. My Qualifications & Experience Lived Experience: 17 years of immersion in China. This has given me a deep, native-like understanding of not just the language, but also the nuances, slang, and cultural context that you won't find in a textbook. Teaching Experience: Over 2 years of professional teaching experience. I have taught students both online and in-person. I am skilled at adapting my style for different learners, from playful and patient with children to goal-oriented and efficient with adults. Educational Background: My academic background provides a structured understanding of language and communication. 4. Who the Lessons Are For My lessons are for everyone! I am passionate about sharing the Chinese language with all who are interested. Age Groups: Children (4-12): Fun, game-based lessons with lots of visuals and songs. Teenagers (13-17): Engaging lessons connected to their interests (e.g., pop culture, social media) with a focus on school support or exam prep (e.g., GCSE Chinese). Adults (18+): Practical lessons tailored to personal, travel, or business goals. Levels: Absolute Beginners: Start from scratch with Pinyin and basic greetings. Intermediate Learners: Focus on expanding vocabulary, improving fluency, and mastering more complex grammar. Advanced Learners: Refine pronunciation, learn idiomatic expressions, and discuss complex topics to achieve near-native fluency. Let's start this journey together!
