About Setsuo

こんにちは!
It is Setsuo from Tokyo, but I have been living and teaching for a total of 24 years across cultures (Australia, Fiji & NZ). Here in Australia, I taught Japanese at the University of Sydney, Mount St. Benedict College, Cumberland High School and Westfield Sports High School. My Japanese language student achievements and my teaching have featured in 16 newspapers and 5 newsletters in these three countries over the years. Let's Study Japanese!

MY STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS

Setsuo Otsuka’s Japanese language students in Australia and New Zealand were awarded the following fellowships and prizes. NOTE: Due to my recent teaching commitment, I taught the language in both countries some time ago. Hence, my students' achievements are a bit dated.

[Australia]

1. A Third Year Student from the University of Sydney completed the “One-Year International Exchange Program” at the University of Tokyo (the country's most prestigious university) on a scholarship (2005-2006).

2. A Second Year Student from the University of Sydney completed the “One-Year International Exchange Program” at the University of Tokyo on a scholarship (2004–2005).

3. A Graduate from the University of Sydney was awarded a SPECIAL PRIZE in the “35th NSW State Final Japanese Language Speech Contest” organised by the Japan Foundation in North Sydney, September 2004.

4. A First Year Student from the University of Sydney came SECOND in the “34th NSW State Final Japanese Language Speech Contest” in North Sydney, August 2003.

5. A First Year Student from the University of Sydney came THIRD in the “34th NSW State Final Japanese Language Speech Contest” in North Sydney, August 2003.

6. A Year Eleven Student from Cumberland High School in Sydney came FOURTH in the “33rd NSW State Final Japanese Language Speech Contest” in North Sydney, September 2002.

[New Zealand]

7. A Third Year Student from Auckland University completed the “One-Year International Exchange Program” at Sophia University (one of the most prestigious universities) in Tokyo 1990.

8. A Sixth Form Student (Australian Equivalent; Year 11) came FIRST in the “Japanese Language Speech Competition” in Wellington, 1995.

9. A Seventh Form Student (Year 12) came SECOND in the “Japanese Speaking Competition” organised by the Japanese Language Teachers’ Association in Auckland, 1993.

10. A Fifth Form Student (Year 10) came THIRD in the above “Japanese Speech Competition” in Auckland, 1993.

11. A Fourth Form Student (Year 9) was HIGHLY COMMENDED by the judges from the above “Japanese Speech Competition” in Auckland, 1993.

12. A Sixth Form Student (Year 11 & Aged 17 Years) was COMMENDED by the judges from the above “Japanese Speech Competition” in Auckland, 1993.
