Tips for Excelling in Reading Skills 1. The Right Approach Read the Questions First: Before diving into the passage, quickly read the questions. This primes your brain to look for specific keywords and details while reading the text, saving time. Skim and Scan: Skim the passage once to get the Central Idea (theme) and the overall tone. Scan the passage again with the questions in mind, underlining or highlighting the relevant lines. 2. Answering Strategy Vocabulary Questions: For synonyms/antonyms, read the context of the word in the passage. The meaning must fit perfectly into the sentence where the word appears. Short Answer Questions (SAQs): Be Concise: Answer directly and precisely. Do not copy large chunks of text. Use Your Own Words: Rephrase the answer based on the information in the passage to demonstrate comprehension. Stick to the Passage: Your answer must be based only on the information provided in the given passage, not on your general knowledge. Case-Based Questions: Pay close attention to the visual elements (charts, tables). Questions will often require you to interpret a piece of data from the chart and connect it to a statement in the text. 3. Practice and Time Management Regular practice of 2-3 unseen passages per week is essential to increase both speed and accuracy. Allocate no more than 30-35 minutes for the entire Reading Skills section in the final exam. Practice timing yourself to stay within this limit.
