I know Salah first and foremost as my older brother, but also as my very first and most influential mathematics teacher. During my middle- and high-school years, I was incredibly lucky to have him by my side. At a time when mathematics can feel abstract or intimidating, Salah had a unique ability to make concepts feel intuitive, almost natural.
What I appreciate most about his teaching method is his depth and vision. He never taught mathematics as a collection of formulas to memorize, but as a coherent way of thinking. He constantly brought home advanced mathematics books and scientific journals, far beyond the school curriculum. Those readings didn’t just help me succeed in exams; they shaped my intellectual curiosity and played a decisive role in my later academic path as a researcher at CNRS in France.
One experience in particular has stayed with me all my life. Salah once told me: “A straight line is part of a circle whose diameter is infinite.” At the time, it sounded poetic and mysterious, but I kept it deeply in mind. Years later, while studying at HIAST in Damascus, I was facing a difficult mathematics problem during an exam. Suddenly, that idea came back to me like a flash of insight. I used it to solve the problem in an unconventional way—and I later learned that I was the only student who got it right. That moment made me fully realize the lasting power of Salah’s way of teaching.
Salah is a Superprof because he teaches students how to think, not just how to solve. His explanations stay with you, sometimes for years, and resurface exactly when you need them most. Any student who learns mathematics with him will gain not only technical skills, but a deeper, more elegant understanding of the subject.
