I think it is important to let the student think for himself and to help them on the right track with giving hints and how the relevant material can best be applied. I also think it is important to always look back and ask what the student still knows about the previous lesson / chapter that was discussed. As a result, the student thinks about the different material at multiple times so that it is better applied and remembered.
