About Miriam

Hello, my name is Miriam Trujillo! I am a Glasgow based American, with a passion for education!

I recently completed a Master's degree at University of Glasgow in English Literature. My dissertation focus was Romantic Literature. Before that I lived in tundra Alaska, teaching in the public school system as a SPED paraprofessional, a substitute teacher, and a private tutor.

As someone who received an intense, classically-based education, and who felt so enriched by it, my main goal is to demonstrate the joy of academics. I want students to persevere in their reading until they find a book that truly speaks to them. Or, else I want them to become comfortable enough with the English grammar and vocabulary that they can express themselves fully. I care about giving positive reinforcement, instilling students with a sense of why they need to learn what they do, and I care about making each student feel seen. I have developed many excellent relationships with my current tutoring students, having been told by many parents about how much their students look forward to my sessions. Tutoring is genuinely such a big part of my life, my goals, and my efforts to give back to the community. I feel so fortunate to have this job.

Outside of tutoring, I am a musician: a trained opera singer writing a rock opera album. I am a writer, working on my first few novels. I am a traveller and backpacker, with a special, lifelong love of the Arctic, its cultures, and its peoples.

My main goal is to instil a love of the written word into my students. I want them to find joy in the written word and confidence when approaching texts or writing their own pieces.

In my reading classes, we focus on becoming 'active readers'. We form opinions about characters, make predictions, study the mechanics of the plot, and 'research' any unfamiliar object, place, concept, or historical event that the story portrays.

If your student is still learning to read, my approach is phonics based. We learn how to sound out words, as well as basic English letter patterns. Of course, we also learn to recognise the many many exceptions to the rules.

In my writing classes, we target whatever area where your student most needs work: generating ideas, organising thoughts, spelling, grammar, etc. We do a range of fun exercises designed to work on those areas, with the ultimate goal of your student understanding the English language/grammar and finding joy in expressing themselves through the written word.

In my creative writing classes, we cover all mediums: poetry, prose, and dramatic writing. We focus on elements on the craft, such as inferring, pacing, and dialogue, and I allow students to explore their own preferences at length.

In my Latin classes, we focus on learning and memorising aspects of Latin grammar and vocabulary.

I specialise in students around the primary school age, given my background in primary school education as a special education paraprofessional and substitute teacher. I however, have had great success in tutoring secondary school students in English. My recent completion of a Master's degree in Literature gives me a lot of material to draw upon when teaching older students. I am all about positive reinforcement, and helping the student see how literature can enhance their life! My lessons typically last an hour, but I am flexible with timing.
