About Cathy
I’m an educator, speaker, and advocate dedicated to helping young people find their voice and grow into confident, capable communicators. As the Director of Admissions and Program Development at FDT Academy, I’ve worked with over 1,000 students across Canada, designing and delivering programs that build critical thinking, leadership, and self-expression through debate and public speaking. My approach blends empathy, structure, and real-world relevance. Whether working with shy beginners, high-performing students, or neurodiverse learners, I create inclusive environments where all students feel seen, supported, and inspired to speak up. Beyond academic growth, I’m passionate about helping students rebuild confidence and connection, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. My mission is simple: to empower young people with the tools they need to succeed in school, in life, and in their communities.

My Approach as a Tutor: Empowering Students Through Structured, Supportive Learning
Teaching Methodology and Techniques
My approach combines structure, empathy, and engagement. I believe that learning should be active and student-centered. I use interactive techniques such as guided discussion, real-time feedback, and performance-based tasks (e.g., debates, mock presentations, storytelling exercises). I also integrate confidence-building strategies—especially important for students who are shy, neurodivergent, or recovering from disrupted learning environments post-COVID.
I tailor my teaching to each student’s learning style. Visual learners may benefit from flowcharts and video analysis, while auditory learners thrive with discussion and verbal feedback. I also emphasize reflective learning by asking students to review their progress and set personal goals.
A Typical Lesson Plan
A standard 60-minute session includes:
Warm-up (5–10 min): A short confidence-boosting activity or game
Skill Focus (15–20 min): Targeted instruction on a communication or debate concept (e.g., structure, tone, rebuttals)
Application (20–25 min): Practice through debate rounds, speech delivery, or peer critique
Feedback & Reflection (5–10 min): Guided discussion on strengths, areas to improve, and setting the next goal
Lessons are always adaptive, based on student progress, competition schedules, or school assignments.
What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor
What makes me unique is my holistic focus: I don’t just teach speaking...I help students find their voice. I bring over a decade of experience in coaching debate and public speaking, leading programs that have served over 1,000 students and generated nearly $2 million in educational impact. I work with students of all abilities, including high-performing students on the autism spectrum, and I focus on both technical skill and emotional development.
My students consistently report feeling more confident, prepared, and engaged—not just in public speaking, but in school and social settings as well.
Who My Lessons Are For
My lessons are ideal for:
Students in Grades 4–12 (primarily beginners)
Students preparing for speech competitions, or need to articulate well for interviews etc.
High schoolers building leadership and presentation skills for post-secondary applications
Neurodiverse learners who thrive with patient, personalized instruction
ESL students looking to strengthen fluency and confidence
Whether your child is shy and just starting out or already on a competitive debate team, I create a safe space to grow, speak, and lead.
