About Isaiah

I'm currently a 2nd year BSc Actuarial Science student, but I am also an avid chess player, as well as a competitive one! I used to be decent at chess until I started taking it seriously and at the age of 15, I represented Sabah in the nationals tournament.

My chess coaching experience goes back to my high school days, where I coached and prepped my fellow teammates before tournaments since we didn't have a teacher that was good at chess back then. Also, I have 8 years (and counting) of experience as a Sunday school teacher, thus I am able to teach children of young ages very well.

Thus far, I have almost 200 hours of private coaching experience with different clients, and as of 3 August 2021, I have officially been recognized as an Ambassador, the highest form of recognition, here on Superprof.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update: Due to high demand, I will temporarily stop accepting bookings for my services past 13 September 2021 as I continue my studies. Also, I will only continue to accept new students up until 29 August 2021; and any bookings must then be settled before 13 September 2021.

What I will do during our first session is to play a game against you to gauge your playing level and strength. Most likely, I will be able to identify areas of improvement and suggest a study plan for you immediately after a quick analysis, but of course, if you have a specific plan, I’ll be more than happy to adjust my approach based on your requirements. Either ways, I will be teaching you actively during the tutoring session, and I will also prepare supplementary PDFs that I will write myself for your improvement to read whenever, wherever.

If you just want to pick up chess as a new skill or hobby, I can start teaching from scratch, and if you are a tournament player playing at school level, I can coach on advanced strategies and tactics, as well as provide tips and tricks that are useful in over-the-board (OTB, real life) tournament matches.

You can judge my skill level based on my chess.com profile here: (concealed information)

Edit: Apparently Superprof doesn’t allow me to show links, but my username on chess.com is Quickforte

Summary: if you are a hobbyist, or if you are a parent who is seeking a coach to guide your child (ages 7 and up) to be successful in local school tournaments (all the way up to state level), I’m your guy.

Details

My rates for personal coaching sessions is RM33/hr, but that drops to RM30/hr when you pay upfront for 5 sessions or more.

Lesson at your preferred place available if inside Cyberjaya, but I will add my Grab expenses (two-ways) to the total charged.

If you would prefer me to teach a group, please feel free to contact me and we can discuss the rates!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Remarks:
1. After the initial 30-minute trial session, any further sessions must be paid for upfront.

2. Once I confirm your payment, you reserve the right to choose your preferred date and time slot for the session(s). You may distribute the hours into one or more sessions according to your preference as long as:

- each session is at least 60 minutes long,
- the number of hours booked does not exceed the number of hours paid for, and
- you must inform me your plans to book my services latest 48 hours before the start time of each session.

3. Should I agree to your booking request, the session(s) can only be rescheduled if you inform me of your intention to do latest 48 hours before the session(s) begin. Again, the rescheduled date and time must be mutually agreed upon. Otherwise, the session(s) cannot be rescheduled and the amount paid for the aforementioned will be deducted from your balance regardless of your attendance of the session(s).

4. If I am unable to conduct the session(s) which has been mutually agreed on, you reserve the right to reschedule the session to another date and time which we will mutually agree upon. Alternatively, you could ask for a refund equal to the amount that would have been paid if the session(s) had taken place.

Summary:
When you book a session with me, I will take care to prepare in advance whatever that is necessary to ensure that you receive the best possible learning experience during your session with me. Thus, it is unfair to me if you decide to postpone or cancel a session that we have previously agreed upon, especially when it is done very last minute, because then I would've wasted my time preparing for a session that never happened. Therefore, I would like to reserve the right to charge you for the session as compensation for the time I spent on preparations.

  • When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?

I started playing chess at the young age of 5, which was when my father first taught me the game. I always enjoyed the game, but I only started developing a competitive passion for the game at the age of 14 because I wanted to be a better player and play in major tournaments.
  • Which artists or works affect you the most?

In terms of chess works, the game between Levitsky vs Marshall in 1912 was the most memorable case study for me, but in terms of general arts and works, I am an avid fan of literature. Thus, I would say that Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland, written by Lewis Carroll, impacted me a lot as a child reading it – I would say it’s perhaps the second most challenging book I’ve read, first place goes to The Chronicles of Narnia, but I had a lot of fun trying to make sense of the story and I found the thrill of understanding it exhilarating.
  • What are the qualities and skill required to succeed in this area?

Just like any other game, you will improve by simply playing the game. But of course, your improvement will be faster through good habits such as analysing games after playing, solving puzzles and perhaps, more importantly, having a consistent training schedule.
  • What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?

Apart from the usual “Don’t give up!”, I would advise that person to never be afraid to explore alternative solutions, even if it means going back to square one because many times, we may end up in situations where we feel like we’ve hit a dead end with no good way of continuing, but that probably just means it’s time to find a different solution, and this is the same for anyone out there trying to master chess as well :)
  • How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

Chess used to be my proving ground back in my school days – I wasn’t great athletically, so chess was my best shot of proving that I can be excellent not just academically, but also outside of academics.
  • What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?

My proudest achievement in chess was my 2015 season campaign. Having failed to qualify out of the district stage one year back, I trained hard, using only free resources on the internet as well as the chess books my father kept back at home. I ended up surpassing my goals that year – I only aimed to qualify into the state tournament but ended up qualifying for the nationals that year, which was a pleasant bonus and also proved that with hard work and effort, anything is possible!
  • Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?

Most of my students are children, so I do sometimes wonder how I can never fail to be amazed at their amazing capabilities and aptitude for learning new things. Most of them do see statistical improvements in their online chess performance within 5 sessions, but the one that stood out the most, for me, was a student’s ability to make a 700-point improvement in two weeks on their Puzzle ratings on lichess, which indicates an excellent sense of logic and pattern recognition.
  • Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

I always try to befriend my students, and it’s so much more fun and easier
    talking to friends!
