1. Introduction (10 minutes)
Objective Review: The day's goal is introduced...to analyze a key theme and how characters' actions develop this theme.
Hook: Student asked to interpret the meaning of an image or quote from the text
Discussion Question: What role do characters play in shaping the theme of a story?
2. Direct Instruction (15 minutes)
Theme Overview: Define "theme" and provide examples from familiar stories or novels.
Character Development: Discuss how characters evolve and how their choices affect the story’s theme.
Modeling: Read a short passage from the text and model how to identify a theme and analyze a character’s role in developing it.
3. Guided Practice (20 minutes)
Student will read a passage from the text and identify:
The theme(s) of the passage
How the main character contributes to that theme
4. Independent Practice (15 minutes)
Writing Exercise: Student will select a different passage from the text and write a brief paragraph:
Identifying the theme of the passage
Analyzing how the character’s actions or decisions contribute to that theme
5. Conclusion (10 minutes)
Review: Recap the theme and character analysis process.
Exit Ticket: Student will write one sentence explaining the theme of the story and how a character influences it.
Homework: Assign reading for the next lesson and ask student to continue analyzing characters in relation to the theme.
