About Alex
I’ve been passionate about science and maths since before I can remember - inspired by documentaries and museum visits, I know that science is as rewarding as it is challenging, and can help us deepen our understanding of the world around us.
Following my interest for science on the grand scale, I studied my undergraduate and Master’s degree at The University of Manchester - graduating with a First class honours degree certified by the Institute for Chemical Engineering. Motivated by my ethic for sustainability, I then started my PhD in Chemical Engineering at Brunel University of London in 2021, specialising in food sustainability. Alongside publishing my research in peer-reviewed academic journals, I’ve since worked as an enthusiastic teaching assistant, academic mentor and private tutor. I love motivating and teaching people how to follow their passion into the world of science.
My lessons are always tailored to the individual learner, whatever their background or confidence level. I teach Chemistry and Physics up to A-Level and Mixed Science up to GCSE, covering all major UK exam boards - OCR, Edexcel and AQA. Further, informed by my academic and research track record, and experience with the UK Higher Education system, I also offer personalised academic support for undergraduate and Masters students, Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) mentoring, and university applications support. I hold an enhanced DBS clearance.
Please do get in touch and I’d be very pleased to see how I can help.

My lessons are always tailored to the pupil’s needs. I take care to get to know the student and understand their specific learning requirements and communication style. Lessons always align with the relevant exam board and specification, but focus on specific knowledge gaps or skills that we identify as needing work. My focus is always to ensure the underlying concepts are understood, before building confidence and resilience with practice questions and other activities. I take care to ensure the pace of lessons is manageable yet realistic with regard to learning goals and exam preparation. I cover the mainstream exam boards (OCR, Edexcel, AQA) and use Zoom and Google online classrooms for online sessions. I’ll also send out any recorded or written materials for the student to keep and review at the end of each session as needed.

I got to know Alex through the Doctoral Researchers Peer Mentoring Scheme at Brunel University London, where he was assigned as my peer mentor during the early stage of my PhD. As an international student, starting a doctoral journey in a new academic and cultural environment can be overwhelming, but Alex played a crucial role in helping me adapt quickly and confidently.
What I appreciate most about Alex’s mentoring approach is his clarity, patience, and practicality. Rather than giving generic advice, he always provided concrete, actionable guidance tailored to my situation. For example, he explained key academic milestones in a very structured way, especially the 9-month review process—what materials to prepare, how to organise them, and what examiners typically expect. This guidance was instrumental in helping me successfully pass my 9-month review.
Beyond academic support, Alex also helped me integrate into the wider Brunel community. He introduced me to useful campus facilities, shared insights into local culture, and offered advice on navigating daily life in the UK. This holistic support made a significant difference in reducing the uncertainty I initially felt as an international student.
One particularly memorable experience was when we had a detailed discussion about preparing for the 9-month review. Alex walked me through examples, shared his own experience, and helped me clarify my research narrative. That session not only improved my confidence but also shaped how I approached my PhD progression more strategically.
Overall, Alex is an outstanding mentor who genuinely cares about supporting others. His combination of academic insight, practical advice, and personal encouragement makes him a “Super tutor” in every sense. I would highly recommend him to any doctoral researcher looking for guidance, especially those new to the UK academic environment.Alex mentored applicants to our PhD student training partnership, at different stages of the application and assessment process. His mentoring and coaching skills helped applicants towards success in achieving funding offers.
I have had the pleasure of supervising Alex during his PhD, and I have also worked with him in my teaching for third‑year Chemical Engineering students at Brunel University London. Alex is very patient and thoughtful in the way he supports students, and he has a real talent for explaining complex ideas clearly and accessibly. He brings creativity to the development of teaching materials, always looking for ways to make challenging concepts easier to understand.
Alex is attentive, calm, and genuinely engaged with students’ learning. His strong engineering background comes through in the rigour and precision of his explanations, and he combines this with a caring, compassionate approach that helps students feel supported and confident. Alex is responsible, reliable, and deeply committed to helping others learn — qualities that make him an excellent tutor and teacher. I recommend him wholeheartedly.
I came to know Alex in a university setting through my role as the Peer Mentoring Programme Coordinator.
Alex was a peer mentor for doctoral researchers at the university for over two years. During this programme, he mentored several new doctoral researchers, supporting them through their first year of the PhD journey. His dedication and the valuable support he provided were well received by his mentees. I have full confidence in Alex’s ability to teach and mentor others, together with his in-depth knowledge of chemistry.View more recommendations
