  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I’ve had a passion for literature and theatre for as long as I can remember. I learnt to read and write a full year before starting school, devoured books throughout my early years and school days, and was gifted at learning foreign languages, too. The first time I performed on stage, I was just six years old. At nine, I tried to write a novel—about a dog, from a dog’s point of view (as you do). I wrote a mere ten-page manuscript before running out of ideas, but my earnest attempt filled some of those long, hot, never-ending summer days with plenty of imaginative thinking (TV was the only household screen available in my childhood, and our TV time was strictly limited). So it came as no surprise when I went on to study English Language and
Literature whilst also training in Physical Theatre, and to work in both creative industries and education.

Tutoring English was actually my first paid job, straight after finishing secondary school—I helped a couple of students who’d flunked their exams to prepare for resits. This quickly became a key source of income during my uni days, expanding to include students who wanted to excel in the subject rather than just pass their exams. And although I’d worked as a school teacher at various points over the past two and a half decades, the current UK school system is simply incompatible with my creative career. Private tutoring, on the other hand, allows for full flexibility with scheduling. Plus I find 1:1 teaching far, far more rewarding than teaching a class of thirty—students are more focused in 1:1 scenarios and the effects of my work are more immediate, more comprehensive, more apparent.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach English Language and Literature for all ages, stages and qualifications, as well as Creative Writing, Drama, Public Speaking, Performance Storytelling—plus a bunch of other subjects at secondary school level (please see my profile). I can honestly say that, when it comes to these subjects, there is no topic I’m less keen to discuss with my students! Literature explores human nature and the human condition, and such discussions with students are always stimulating and thought-provoking. I also particularly enjoy enabling my students to not only recognise and understand aspects of a writer’s craft, but to apply the learning to their own writing. It’s a truly joyous, highly rewarding feeling seeing a student develop their writing skils, whether analytical or creative, from a single idea or paragraph into a well-crafted and convincing piece, be it a well-argued academic essay or an engaging short story, for example.
  • Did you have any role models, a teacher who inspired you?

My first role model was my grandmother. She was the main storyteller in our family, who had fed my young mind from early childhood with poems, myths and legends, sparking my sense of wonder, fanning the flames of my curiosity (I’m the eldest of five children so my mother was forever preoccupied with my younger siblings). And although I had some great teachers in both Primary and Secondary school, it was the school librarian who recognised and further encouraged my passion for storytelling by recommending ever more exciting books and exhilarating tales. The two of them gave me the confidence to study literature and become a writer myself.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Above all else, I’d say it’s the ability to make lessons fun and engaging in order to inspire genuine interest in the subject—bored people don’t learn! But also, the ability to correctly assess a student’s strengths and weaknesses, as that ensures that lessons are bespoke, tailored to the exact needs of each student. A number of other qualities play a huge part in the success of any tutoring arrangement, too: patience, flexibility, consistency, positive attitude towards students’ efforts, as well as attention to detail and a sense of humour all contribute to good rapport with students and lead to successful outcomes.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

Like most people, I experienced my first real crush when I was aboutthirteen or fourteen years of age. And like most people, I was terribly shy about it (despite all my natural confidence, further bolstered by years of public speaking and performing; such is the power of infatuation). So instead of confessing my feelings to the boy I was smitten with, I wrote a poem about it. Unbeknownst to me, our teacher went and submitted the poem to a teen poetry competition. Imagine my utter mortification when, some weeks later, the teacher triumphantly produced a copy of the teen magazine and asked me to read my published poem in front of the whole class! My description of my secret crush was so obvious and revealing, everybody knew instantly who it was about and the gossip spread around the school like wildfire! By the end of the week it was old news, of course, but for the rest of my school years I was never able to even look, let alone discuss or analyse, a love poem without immediately turning lobster-red with embarrassment at the mere memory of the incident.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

The only difficulties or challenges I’ve ever faced (and continue to face) in teaching my subject have to do with unrealistic expectations, especially when it comes to GCSE students. Students at A level and above choose to study this subject, hence do not need reminding to read, read, read; their priority tends to be mastering the subject, not just chasing the grades. Despite English Lang and Lit being a core subject (with no less than 4 separate exam papers), for some reason, GCSE students regularly underestimate just how much work is required, and how long it takes to master it. So I get panicked messages every single year over Easter break, in the run-up to exams, asking for a few lessons to push a grade 5 to a grade 7 or above. This is simply not possible! All that reading and writing TAKES TIME. It cannot be crammed at the last minute. Sure, you can cram enough for a pass, but not for a top grade. Sustained effort over a prolonged period is the only way to truly excel in this subject, I’m afraid. Actually, there is another challenge nowadays, but that is a curse of our tech-driven, screen-based digital age: drastically shortened attention spans.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I use ‘storytelling’ as an umbrella term to cover all my passions: reading, writing, editing, translating, mentoring, performing, directing, producing and yes—teaching, too!
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

The fact that I don’t stop until I’ve got the absolute best effort from my students. I mean, if you’re gonna do something, either give it your best shot or don’t bother, right?
