I have worked in public education for over 16 years all while I was finishing my PhD about West Virginia Native American history. I get excited about the strong connections between the distant past and every student today. History can be fun and edgy but most importantly it can be understood and remembered.

I like to humanize the events of the past and distill it down into terms that an everyday person might have experienced. I often prepare fact and event based historical fiction stories as conversation starters to get students into the living past. I try my best to make the past a much less foreign place by consistently comparing the events to the present and helping students explore the connections to their own lives.
