About Shannon

I’m an experienced theological educator and international academic with over a decade of teaching in universities, Bible colleges, and cross-cultural ministry settings across the U.S., UK, and Asia. I hold a Master of Theology (MTh) from the University of Bangor (UK) and have delivered 100+ courses, workshops, and lectures focused on Scripture, theology, missiology, and spiritual formation. My teaching approach is rich yet accessible—balancing scholarly depth with personal relevance. I specialize in helping students think theologically, not just absorb content. Whether you’re preparing for ministry, academic assessment, or personal enrichment, I aim to guide you with clarity, patience, and insight grounded in both tradition and real-world context.

My Approach as a Tutor in Theology and Biblical Studies As a tutor, my role is not to dictate answers but to guide students into deep, transformative engagement with Scripture. I see myself as a fellow traveler—a guide who sets the path, provides the tools, and encourages the student to make the journey themselves. My goal is to teach students not what to think, but how to think theologically. Using the words of C.S. Lewis: “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen—not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” Likewise, I aim to help students develop a lens through which they can see the whole of life in light of Scripture. ______________________________________________________________ Teaching Methods and Techniques I employ a blend of traditional and modern pedagogical tools: Textual Study: The sacred text (NIV, NASB, Greek/Hebrew Online Tools) is always the starting point. Students are trained to observe, interpret, and apply Scripture in its ancient literary and historical context. Historical-Cultural Context: Lessons are deeply rooted in ancient Near Eastern backgrounds, Second Temple Judaism, and early church thought. Secondary Resources: Assigned readings from academic texts, articles, and commentaries to complement biblical study. Interactive Learning: Small group discussion, independent study, and shared reflections. Multimedia Tools: Use of maps, visual timelines, theological documentaries, and curated video clips to reinforce and enliven content. Formational Practice: Incorporating short moments of reflection or writing to internalize theological insight. Typical Lesson Plan Topic: The Image of God and the Image of Christ (Imago Dei & Imago Christi) Title: Formed to Reflect: The Image of God in Scripture and the Image of Christ in Us Level: Advanced high school (Years 11–12) or undergraduate (Years 1–2) Lesson Objectives: 1. Understand the meaning of "Imago Dei" in Genesis 1:26–27 within its ancient Near Eastern context. 2. Trace the narrative of humanity's vocation as image-bearers through the Old and New Testaments. 3. Introduce "Imago Christi" in Romans 8:29 and Colossians 1:15 as a theological continuation and fulfillment. 4. Explore the implications for personal identity, vocation, and discipleship. ________________________________________________________ Outline: Introduction & Icebreaker (5 mins) Brief question: "What does it mean to be made in God's image?" Primary Text Reading (10 mins) Genesis 1:26–28, Romans 8:29, Colossians 1:15–20 (NIV) Contextual Exploration (15 mins) Overview of Imago Dei in the ancient Near East (image language and royal function) Introduction to Second Temple Jewish expectations around the Messiah as representative of restored humanity Discussion (15 mins) Small group questions: How have you heard "image of God" taught before? Have you heard it? What new insights emerge from understanding the ancient context? Theological Reflection (10 mins) Imago Christi as the reshaping of human identity into Christlikeness (Romans 8:29) Jesus as both the true image and the model for transformation Application & Integration (10 mins) What does it mean to live as image-bearers in the world today? Reflection journal prompt: "Where in my life is Christ being formed in me?" Closing (5 mins) Recap & assigned reading for next session (e.g. selected chapters from Richard Middleton's The Liberating Image) _______________________________________________________________ What Sets Me Apart I teach theology as a discipline of exploration and wonder—not indoctrination. I help students situate Scripture then and there, not rush to apply it out of context here and now. I equip learners with historical, cultural, and literary tools to engage the Bible as it was meant to be read. My approach is rigorous yet deeply personal, helping students build critical thinking and spiritual insight. I foster environments of respect, curiosity, and humility. ______________________________________________________ Who My Lessons Are For Upper secondary students (Years 11–12) preparing for theological studies or Christian leadership roles University students in Years 1–2 studying theology, ministry, divinity, or biblical studies Mature learners or home-educated students exploring deep engagement with Scripture Students seeking support with biblical exegesis, theological writing, or worldview integration If you’re looking for a tutor who will help you go beyond surface answers and journey into the depth and beauty of Scripture—anchored in history, framed by theology, and brought to life by reflection—I’d be honored to guide you there.
