About Maya
I genuinely enjoy Geography and sharing that enthusiasm with others. I am friendly, positive, patient and approachable, and aim to create a supportive but challenging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, build confidence in their abilities and develop their own interest in the subject.
Growing up and studying across Europe and Africa has given me an international perspective on Geography and first-hand experience of many of the social, cultural, economic and environmental processes we study. I love bringing these real-world perspectives into my tutoring to make Geography engaging and relevant.
At the University of Exeter, my interest in Geography and education led me back to the IB for my final-year dissertation, where I critically analysed the IBDP Geography curriculum. The research received a high First and was nominated by the university for a Royal Geographical Society dissertation award in education. I therefore understand IB Geography as a former student, a Geography graduate and from an academic research perspective.

My lessons are interactive and tailored to each student, with a strong focus on understanding, confidence and exam technique. I build concepts step-by-step, helping students make connections across the course and relate Geography to real-world events, familiar places and personal experiences to make learning meaningful and memorable.
Active recall is incorporated throughout lessons to strengthen knowledge, identify gaps and build confidence. Students are encouraged to explain, connect and apply ideas rather than simply review content.
A major focus is turning understanding into exam marks. We work on:
● IB command terms and exam technique
● Essay and extended-response structure
● Analysis, evaluation and building strong geographical arguments
● Effective use of case studies
● Interpreting maps, graphs, data and unfamiliar sources
● Past-paper practice and targeted feedback
● Effective revision and active-recall strategies
Lessons are typically one hour and can focus on ongoing support, difficult topics, essay writing, assessments or exam preparation.
I also have experience tutoring students with dyslexia, as well as close family experience of dyslexia. This has given me a strong appreciation of different ways of learning and processing information, and I adapt my explanations, resources and learning strategies to suit each student.
