About Karis

I am a qualified French teacher with lots of experience working in secondary schools. I gained a 2.1 in French with History. I have always had a passion for the French culture, I've been learning since I was 15. I have guided aspiring students at university to study French, giving my personal experience with it. I have had experience in tutoring French online therefore I know what to teach, and help you improve on. Come and learn the curriculum with me and have fun with it, as after all learning is fun! I offer my first lesson half price so please send me a message if you'd like a trial! I have a full DBS check if you require any further information.

About the lesson

I will help with homework as well as conjugation of tenses, listening and speaking skills so that you can achieve the very best. I know about the current Modern Languages curriculum therefore am fully capable. I can teach from Beginner to Advanced, whatever you need help in! A challenge is exciting, ask me anything!

Perfect! Karis taught my daughter French for her GCSEs and she really helped her become more confident. My daughter enjoyed her lessons and said that Karis taught in a way that was effective but easy to learn from. I would highly recommend! Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?
I have been speaking the French language since I was 15 so for over ten years now! I had an amazing tutor at the time who really encouraged and pushed me to achieve my maximum potential. She had a lot of belief in me that I lacked at the time and I went on to achieve well. I now speak the language fluently and currently teach full-time.
Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?
I would say I am often reminded by Voltaire when I see the language and how his philosophy changed a lot of things. I remember reading Candide during A-Level French and it opened my eyes to the culture and how language has changed over time.
Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?
I love the word 'formidable' which means wonderful. I always use this with my students to encourage their learning.
Why does speaking this language matter to you?
I come from a French speaking background so learning the language has always been very important. I grew up with a Mauritian family so it was important for me to be able to speak it. I also love meeting people from France and francophone countries.
What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?
The main difficulty is the understanding of grammar and how to apply it. It took me some time to understand how verbs worked and the agreement of adjectives. Of course, you have to remain consistent and never give up!

Learning a language opens your heart and soul to greater opportunities.
How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?
I've travelled a lot to France and back in 2017, during my second year of university, I had to work for 11 weeks in the French alps. It was a wonderful experience but it was a lot of hard work. I interacted a lot with the locals but during my time off, I could go exploring. I took a tram up to Nid d'aigle as you can see in the photo. Being in France for 2 months+ really helped me to boost my confidence in speaking and writing, which I struggled with before.
What makes you a Superprof in language?
I have a passion for teaching and inspiring those to follow their goals in life. No task can be too impossible, look at what I've achieved in the last few years! I am an all round helpful, bubbly and good natured individual and no question is too silly. I hope I can create more of a love for language learning and to introduce my French mascot Pascal to encourage more speaking.
