About Mike
I believe "Teaching Position" is the most honorable job regardless of its low income comparing with other jobs, and I am very proud doing this job for many years, since I was in elementary school tutoring my classmates. Long time ago I read a phrase somewhere that: " Democracy in a country can be measured by the freedom of their judicial system" in another word if a Judge is afraid to judge fairly and intimidated by higher power, then there is no democracy. I personally change this phrase to the following:
Democracy in a country can be measured by the freedom of their judicial and educational systems", in another word: if a teacher can not evaluate his/her students fairly and give them the grade they deserve, and be intimidated by some high powered government agencies, then there is no democracy.

During many years of my teaching experience, I found out that large percentage of my Mathematics student repeatedly saying: " I hate math". Therefore, my first attempt was to change their feeling toward math from hate to love or at least neutral (not hate).
In order to accomplish this task, I tried to show them many basic enjoyable math puzzles and tricks, also convincing them that knowledge of math would help them to be successful in their career regardless of what type of jobs they are looking for, giving them several examples such as:
-In low level math courses such as Developmental I show them a quick estimation of their total charges in grocery stores before going to cashier
-For College Algebra course, I show them comparing the monthly cost of two different Electric Companies or two different phone service providers using slope and equation of lines. Many examples can be found to absorb the attention of students.
_When I teach Calculus, I use my Engineering knowledge to show them how the Slope of the Tangent Line and Instantaneous velocity helped to improve the Technology.
