About Jamil
Hello! My name is Jamil from New York City and I'm excited to be your next tutor! I'm a professional software engineer working in the Ed Tech industry and hold engineering degrees from both NYU and Columbia University. I began tutoring when I was an undergraduate and worked for various departments at NYU's Tandon School of Engineering. I helped students grasp and solve problems in computer science, programming, computer architecture and math. In addition to University students, I also tutored primary school students for years in reading, math and writing. When I was an undergraduate, I saw firsthand the lack of help available in advanced engineering courses. In order to meet my academic goals, I had to learn how to learn fast and teach myself. Along the way, I discovered various tricks to solving problems and tackling exams. As a way to reinforce my own learning, I signed up to be a tutor for those very same classes. I have tutored with or personally used languages like Python, Java, C, C++, PHP and Ruby. I look forward to those moments when a student "gets it," which motivates not just them but myself as well. After discussing a student's goals, experience and academic struggles, I craft a plan to cover the material they need in the classroom. When tutoring software engineering material, often I start by explaining concepts with visual diagrams and making analogies with the real world. I use a drawing tablet and software (similar to Khan Academy). I can follow that up with writing code myself and explaining each design decision. After confirming that the student understands, I give problems to solve with the student and review their thought process and nudge them along if they get stuck. At the end of the lesson I give a high level summary of what we covered and leave space for any additional questions. Before concluding, I ask about what is coming up next in class or if they can share material from class with me. It's important to meet the student where they are at and put myself in their place in class. Typically my software engineering lessons are for secondary school (high school) and university students. Remote lessons are conducted via Zoom (not the Super Prof platform). Please make sure you have Zoom installed/updated and have a working webcam and/or microphone on your device. Please consider using a desktop or laptop computer, instead of a phone, for the best experience. Zoom links are emailed/messaged before the start of the lesson. While students are welcome to use the messaging system on Superprof, I encourage communication via text or WhatsApp for the best response times.
