About Shinji

Hi! My name is Shinji.
I’m from Japan and currently living in the United States. My parents are originally from China, so I’m ethnically Chinese. Because of my background, I speak Mandarin and have a strong understanding of both Japanese and Chinese language and culture.

I’m happy to help you improve your Japanese while sharing interesting cultural insights and differences between Japan and China!

I believe that learning Japanese should feel practical, meaningful, and enjoyable, not overwhelming. My approach focuses on helping students actually use Japanese in real-life situations, while building confidence step by step.

Rather than memorizing rules in isolation, we learn Japanese through context, conversation, and purpose—so you understand why something is used, not just how.

Teaching Method & Techniques

Communication-first approach
We prioritize speaking and listening, even at the beginner level, so students don’t become “silent learners.”

Context-based grammar
Grammar is taught through real examples, dialogues, and situations instead of abstract explanations.

Customized lessons
I adjust materials, speed, and focus based on your goals (travel, daily conversation, JLPT, work, or anime/manga).

Active output practice
You’ll speak, read aloud, build sentences, and explain ideas in your own words—this is where real progress happens.

Gentle correction & clear feedback
I correct mistakes in a supportive way and explain patterns so you don’t repeat the same errors.

A Typical Lesson Plan

A standard lesson usually looks like this (flexible depending on your level):

Warm-up conversation (5–10 min)
Review previous content or casual chat to activate Japanese thinking.

Main topic of the lesson

New grammar, vocabulary, or expressions

Explained simply with examples and comparisons to English (when helpful)

Guided practice

Sentence building

Short role-plays or Q&A

Reading or listening (depending on your goals)

Free practice / conversation
Use what you learned in a natural way.

Feedback & review
Key takeaways, corrections, and optional homework suggestions.

What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor

I focus on confidence-building, not perfection.

I explain Japanese in a way that actually makes sense to non-native speakers.

I’m patient, supportive, and good at noticing where students get stuck.

I care about your long-term growth, not just finishing a textbook.

Lessons feel like a collaborative conversation, not a lecture.
