About Jack
Jack Ta is a highly spirited jazz pianist, arranger, and composer.
Born in Vietnam and raised in New Zealand, he began his musical journey at age seven on drums before finding his voice on the piano at twelve. In 2024, Jack relocated to New York City after being accepted into the prestigious Manhattan School of Music, where he studies under renowned pianist Ted Rosenthal.
Since moving to the U.S., Jack has performed at notable venues including Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club and has shared the stage with leading artists such as Jaleel Shaw, Benny Benack III, Ingrid Jensen, Samuel Torres, John Benitez, and others.
Rooted in the jazz tradition, Jack draws from a wide range of inspiration from Art Tatum, Bud Powell, and Hank Jones, to Brad Mehldau and Aaron Parks. His music blends tradition, joy, and innovation, reflecting both reverence and curiosity.
A winner of the 2023 New Zealand National Jazz Improvisation Competition and a National YoungArts Winner, Jack is dedicated to creating music that uplifts, inspires, and—as he puts it—“happifies” people.
Previous mentors include Joe Block, Rossano Sportiello, and Jeremy Manasia

My lessons are designed to help students understand music in a practical, musical, and enjoyable way. Whether you are a beginner, an intermediate player, or preparing for auditions at top conservatories, I focus on giving you the tools and foundations needed to elevate your playing to the next level.
I teach jazz piano, improvisation, harmony, theory, ear training, reharmonization, repertoire, comping, arranging, and audition preparation. Although I am a pianist, I also work with students on all instruments who want to improve their jazz language, confidence, and overall musicianship.
A typical lesson may include:
* Building strong fundamentals on your instrument
* Learning jazz standards and repertoire
* Understanding harmony and expanding voicings capabilities
* Developing improvisation vocabulary
* Practicing swing feel, phrasing, and time
* Reharmonization techniques
* Preparing for auditions, performances, or school applications
* Learning how to practice more effectively
My teaching style is clear, flexible, and student-focused. I want each student to understand music from first principles, so they can freely express their creative ideas in their own unique way.
All instruments and levels are welcome.
