About Johanna
I grew up in Stamford, Connecticut, and attended high school at The Ursuline School in New Rochelle, New York, and currently attend Howard University in Washington D.C.. I am a REACH Prep scholar, selected to be a part of Cohort 20 in a 12-year educational access and college success program that helps motivated and talented Black and Latinx students graduate from independent and top colleges. I have worked for numerous years as a tutor and camp counselor. I have also volunteered at soup kitchens, Nathaniel Witherell Nursing Home, and as a catechism teacher's aide. I enjoy doing yoga, biking, and hiking in the summer months.

I understand everyone doesn't learn the same and it takes a few sessions to develop a relationship with one another and figure out the best way to tackle educational setbacks. A typical lesson plan includes beginning with drinking some water to provide the brain with oxygen and help brain cell communication and stretching to activate the mind and body if the student is willing. During lessons, I typically try to provide students with access to different activities targeting all the learning styles. I provide video examples, explaining it logically, relevant games, written explanations, and examples, among others. I also believe it is important to make a good connection with students, I ask about their social life, family life, and aspirations. Without making the connection it is more likely the student won't be engaged in the lessons and feel unheard. I have most experience tutoring at an elementary level, however, I have also peer tutored while I was in high school and was able to get a classmate back on track and excel in the subject.
