• 1) When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

  I developed a passion for music as a kid when I first started learning the piano. There was something captivating about how a single instrument could create such a wide range of sounds and emotions. As I grew older, I delved into synthesizers and music technology, which opened up even more creative possibilities, and I also taught myself guitar. Despite exploring different instruments, the piano has remained my favourite. Its versatility and the endless creative potential it offers make it both inspiring and challenging. Plus, its requirement for both hands adds a unique complexity that keeps me engaged.

• 2) Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

  Radiohead is my go-to band that I can listen to on a loop without ever getting tired of it. Their album In Rainbows is probably the record I've played the most-it's a perfect blend of boundary-pushing songwriting and production. Their music has so much depth, both sonically and lyrically, that I always seem to discover something new with each listen.

• 3) Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

  One of the most challenging yet rewarding courses I could offer would be a deep dive into creative processing and advanced mixing techniques. This course would explore not just the technical aspects-like dynamic, harmonic, and modulation effects-but also how to use them creatively to shape a unique sonic identity.
  
  We'd break down professional mixes, analyze how different elements contribute to the final sound, and then apply those techniques in real-world scenarios. Students would get hands-on experience, learning how to transform raw recordings into polished tracks that meet industry standards.
  
  What makes this course particularly riveting is the balance between theory and practice. We'd experiment with unconventional methods, push boundaries, and explore how creative risks can lead to innovative results. By the end, students wouldn't just understand how to mix-they'd be able to craft mixes that truly elevate a song's emotional impact.

• 4) What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

  I think the piano is both the most versatile and the most complicated instrument to master. Its complexity lies in its unlimited options-with 88 keys and the ability to play melody, harmony, and rhythm simultaneously, the creative potential is endless. What really sets the piano apart is the need for independence of the hands. Each hand can be doing something entirely different, which requires a unique level of coordination and brain function. Additionally, dynamics and expression play a huge role, and mastering touch and velocity adds another layer of complexity. From a production perspective, the piano is an invaluable tool. Whether I'm producing electronic, rock, or other music, the piano often acts as a foundation. Mastering the piano not only improves musicality but also enhances my ability to make quick, informed decisions in the studio.

• 5) What are your keys to success?

  For me, success comes down to persistence and loyalty to the cause. If you can form a routine and stay dedicated to your goals, you can achieve anything. Hard work is crucial, but I also believe that interactive learning is essential. Constantly engaging with new ideas, techniques, and feedback helps you grow and evolve, both as a musician and as a professional. Consistency in practice, a willingness to experiment, and a commitment to improvement are all key to success in this field.

• 6) Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

  Thom Yorke - As the frontman of Radiohead, Thom has been a massive influence on my music. His approach to songwriting, blending complex arrangements with emotional depth, resonates deeply with me. I'd love to pick his brain about his creative process and how he balances experimentation with accessibility.
  
  Steely Dan (Donald Fagen & Walter Becker) - Their musicianship is unparalleled, and their ability to fuse jazz, rock, and pop into something uniquely their own has always amazed me. Meeting them would be incredible to discuss their intricate songwriting and production techniques, and how they maintain such a distinctive sound while evolving over the years.
  
  Spike Stent - As one of the top mix engineers, Spike has worked with some of my favourite artists, like Radiohead, Muse, and Massive Attack. His ability to shape a song's emotional impact through mixing is something I greatly admire.

• 7) Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

  One of the most valuable lessons I learned at university came while mixing my own music. I had been stuck on a track for days, overthinking every detail and feeling like I was getting nowhere. Frustrated, I decided to take a week off from it. When I came back with fresh ears, everything clicked. I could immediately hear what the track needed, and it came together beautifully. That experience taught me the importance of stepping away when things aren't working. Sometimes, distance and patience are the keys to gaining clarity and approaching a project with renewed creativity.

• 8) What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

  I believe the little touches that make me a Superprof are my ability to adapt to each student's unique learning style and the personal connection I build with them. I understand that everyone learns differently, so I tailor my lessons to meet individual needs-whether that's breaking down complex concepts into simpler terms, offering hands-on practice, or encouraging creative experimentation. I also make sure to create a supportive, non-judgmental environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. Music is a journey, and I believe that fostering a sense of trust and openness is key to helping students grow. Additionally, I bring my real-world experience as both a producer and engineer into the lessons, giving students insights they can't find in textbooks. It's about inspiring confidence and pushing students to reach their full potential, while making the learning process both engaging and rewarding.
