About Hilaree Toni
Mabuhay! Learning Tagalog is one of the most rewarding ways to connect with the culture, and you deserve a guide who brings both absolute professionalism and real-world experience to the table.
Here is why you can feel completely confident working with me:
15 Years in the Philippines + 11 Years in Canada:
I don’t just teach Tagalog from a textbook—I live and breathe both worlds. Having spent 15 years immersed in the Philippines and 11 years living in Canada, I have a unique, firsthand understanding of the exact cultural and linguistic bridges you need to cross. I know exactly how North American English speakers think, where the translation hiccups happen, and how to seamlessly close that gap. You are getting a tutor who truly understands both sides of your world.
Proven, Practical Strategy:
We won’t waste time memorizing rigid, outdated grammar rules that locals don’t even use. My approach is built on The Communicative Approach and Scaffolding. I break down complex Tagalog structures (like those infamous verb conjugations) into simple, logical patterns. You will learn the authentic, conversational Filipino spoken on the streets of Manila today, combined with the professional structure you expect from a high-level coach.
A Warm, Supportive, & Professional Space:
Your time is incredibly valuable, so our sessions will always be highly organized, punctual, and tailored exactly to your pace. But more than that, I promise a warm, encouraging, and completely judgment-free environment. Making mistakes is how we learn! Whether you need to practice a single pronunciation twenty times or need a concept explained in five different ways, you will always be met with infinite patience, a bit of humor, and enthusiastic support. We are a team, and my biggest win is seeing your confidence grow. Let’s unlock your Tagalog fluency together!

As a Tagalog tutor, my approach is collaborative, immersive, and highly practical, focusing on getting students speaking confidently from day one. My framework includes:
Methodology: I prioritize real-world communication over dry grammar memorization. For beginners, I use Taglish (Tagalog-English) as a stepping stone. I demystify complex aspects of the language, like verb affixes (mag-, um-, -in-), by breaking them down into logical patterns. Cultural context—including respectful terms like po/opo and modern slang—is integrated into every lesson.
Warm-up (5%): Quick casual greeting in Tagalog.
Vocabulary (25%): Introducing key words and sentence frames.
Guided Practice (40%): Building sentences together with real-time pronunciation feedback.
Roleplay (20%): Simulating real-life scenarios, like ordering at Jollibee or asking for directions.
Wrap-up (10%): Review and a fun "cultural homework" assignment (e.g., a Pinoy song or video).
Target Audience: My lessons are tailored for Absolute Beginners needing survival phrases, Heritage Learners (Fil-Ams/expats) who understand Tagalog but struggle to speak it, and Advanced Learners mastering complex grammar or professional communication.
What Sets Me Apart: I've spent a big chunk of my life in the Philippines so you can expect that I not only learn the language but I know the culture as well. I also am very fluent in English and familiar with Western culture so you can expect that I can converse with you eloquently as well as immerse you in Filipino culture at the same time.
Whether you want to connect with your roots, talk to a partner, or travel the Philippines, the focus is always on natural, practical fluency.
