About Amazonia
Hey, I'm Amazonia! Earlier this year, I finished my degree in Computer Systems Engineering, where for my final year project, I achieved a life dream of mine by simulating and then physically building my own CPU from logic chips. Now, I'd love to teach you to do the same!
I'd always thought that after uni, my dream job would be in the tech industry... that is, until I started helping out at a primary school. Now I'm going to train to become a teacher instead :D
But it makes sense really, looking back. I've loved communicating knowledge with others since my school days - to the extent where even when I wasn't at the front of the class, I'd still be helping my classmates when they got stuck on something. I could say that, formally or informally, I've been teaching on-and-off since I was 16, when I set up my own club at school to teach other students computer animation (I'm 26 now)! Since then, I've taught all kinds of age groups (from primary school age to adult) and subjects (with computer science and programming being my favourites).
Regardless of what I'm teaching and to whom, it's purpose remains the same: to spread joy about a subject, help others reach that fabled 'aha!' moment, and unlock new worlds of knowledge for people to explore.
If that sounds like fun, I hope to see you in one of my lessons soon :)

I strongly believe that if you're motivated enough to learn, if you have the right support in place, and if challenging concepts are broken down into small enough pieces, you become capable of learning so much more than you give yourself credit for.
That's what my teaching strives for: pushing the bounds of not only what you can do, but what you think you can do. Part of that is caring very much about making the learning process as intuitive and friendly as it can be - so as much as possible, tailoring lessons specifically to your interests, your struggles, and for whatever length of time you need. I also want to give you control over how you learn: that can mean anything from structured, guided lessons, to providing you with the resources to learn things for yourself and using lessons more for mentoring or working on problems you've encountered.
To prospective students: I care much more about your enthusiasm and your willingness to learn than your age or background. For example, I've taught children as young as 8 to count in binary in the past. So, in case you're wondering whether you're capable of learning to build your own computer... I'm here to tell you that if you want to, you absolutely can :)

Amazonia was a student at the university where I work as a tutor. She showed herself to be a kind, compassionate and committed student. Amazonia clearly has a passion for computing and computer science. I witnessed her teaching others about her final degree project. She was able to explain a very complex topic to non-experts in an engaging and clear way. Her enthusiasm made the topic interesting and accessible to others who previously had no or very limited understanding of the topic. Amazonia is a skilled and patient communicator.
I had never looked into computer science before and only had topical knowledge about its foundations. After partaking in Amazonia's presentation to learn about the beginner's 8-Bit CPU they developed, I began to grasp the basics of computer science. Amazonia's teaching was informative in an easy to grasp way and it's been fun since the session noticing traces of binary in our everyday world!
Amazon is a great tutor. They are very patient and encouraging whilst I'm understanding new concepts. They have really helped me to progress further with my coding skills!
Amazonia is a kind, compassionate and helpful person who genuinely takes the time to understand how to support others. I have had the privilege of meeting Amazonia through study based interventions at UEA, where they became a valuable member of our learning community.
Amazonia became a regular contributor to ideas through getting to know others, and showing support and empowerment of other peers who attended. I had the opportunity to attend a demonstration of their final project, which was thoughtfully and clearly delivered. I now understand what binary is in relation to computing, whereas I hadn't before.
Amazonia is a wonderful educator and I wholeheartedly recommend them to Superprof!View more recommendations
