About Tom

I am an Oxford-trained literary historian working on cross-cultural encounters, transnational theatre, translation, and migration to London in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. I have published widely, including several chapters in well-received essay collections, and have a number of forthcoming articles in prestigious literary studies journals. My doctoral thesis was recommended by an internal academic committee for publication with Oxford University Press on the strength and originality of the research. I have also produced several resources for teaching the history of migration and empire in KS3+ classrooms.

I have tutored for many years, but my lecturing career began at the University of Liverpool in 2018, where I taught modules on Shakespeare and the literary culture of Elizabethan England. I have since taught undergraduate and postgraduate papers at several Oxford colleges.

About the lesson

In my experience as an Oxford University lecturer and tutor, a flexible pedagogy built around the student's specific needs and learning style is key to their academic success. During a free 30-min introductory session, I assess the student's current working level, and then we work together to build an effective plan for achieving all their short-term and long-term goals.

Whether they require help with close reading and literary analysis, a particularly difficult theory, essay writing and research skills, exam preparation, applications, or cultivating a passion for reading and the arts, I can help them grow into an accomplished student and a competitive candidate for top university courses. All I ask of my students is commitment and a willingness to engage. If you are ready to work hard and achieve your potential, please get in touch to arrange an introductory session.

Perfect! Tom is patient and kind while teaching on top of being very talented and skilful. He is amazing and giving feedback on what was done well on top of what improvements can be made. I highly recommend Tom if you’re looking for someone to teach you no matter your ability.

My wife and I (both full time GPs) were struggling to provide the additional time and expertise needed to support out 15 year old in his English GCSE's. Literature and writing has never been his strongest subject. We were recommended Tom through a mutual friend and he has been fantastic. He really helped our son to work on his exam technique. He beat his predicted grades and I am convinced that Tom gave him the confidence to do this. He was flexible, patient, and quickly built a great rapport with our children. So much so that we asked him to spend some time with our oldest. She has always been a high achiever and is currently sitting her A-levels, as well as applying to study history at Oxford. Tom has been spending time helping her step up to that university standard they are looking for.

It is my pleasure to recommend Tom as a tutor. We met in academia, and I’ve known him in a professional capacity for 8 years, and have always found him a joy to work with. I’ve had the opportunity to hear him present lectures on Shakespeare and John Milton to non-specialist audiences, and found his presentations engaging, accessible, and informative. I’ve attended several seminars where he’s discussed a veritable wealth of English literature, and his discussions have always been stimulating, insightful, and, simply a joy to listen to.
His passion for his subject is infectious, and he’s always been able to make English literature feel by turns deeply relevant, thought-provoking, but most importantly, not just something to be studied, but something to be treasured and enjoyed. Beyond all of that, he is also a conscientious, trustworthy, and thoroughly decent human being.

Tom was an excellent tutor for my daughter. He articulated his ideas clearly, giving her the time and skills to develop tremendously. He was very patient with her and we’ve seen a marked improvement in her abilities.
