My approach with teaching students is to start where they are and build upon that knowledge base.
I typically start a lesson with a review of previously covered material and link that knowledge to the upcoming lesson.
I introduce the lesson, demonstrate the concepts, have the students work on the concepts, and then reteach the concepts if necessary.
We review the concepts that we just learned and then do a wrap up exercise to check for understanding of the concepts which will drive instruction for the following lesson.
